Benefit of Urso

Hi All,

I saw this in my news feed and thought I’d share: cam.ac.uk/stories/UDCA-COVID19

After years of being told to shield and then be extra careful it’s good to see some light at the end of the tunnel. As I’m already on Urso for PBC I got rather excited. I’m not going to throw a Christmas party, but I feel a lot safer than I gave for about 3 years.

Happy Christmas!

Kindly make it a point to take Urso only under medical supervision and for the prescribed period only. "Hepatoprotective " effect claimed by Ursocol is under question mark , and it's not an innocuous medicine.

“Unanticipated” UDCA toxicity includes hepatitis, pruritus, cholangitis, ascites, vanishing bile duct syndrome, liver cell failure, death, severe watery diarrhea, pneumonia, dysuria, immune-suppression, mutagenic effects and withdrawal syndrome upon sudden halt.

UDCA beyond PBC is unjustified.

Meta-analyses of four randomized clinical trials randomizing 279 patients could not find significant differences regarding mortality or improvement in liver function tests observed after treatment with UDCA

“Hepatoprotective” as a Term Is Not Tangible, Not Objective, Is Immeasurable, Not Quantifiable, and with Unknown Sequel or Clinical Effects, or Benefits, and Is of No Prognostic Value

Rudolph and coworkers reported that after the start of UDCA in primary sclerosing cholangitis, the annual incidence of colorectal carcinoma increased up to 6 years and subsequently decreased

Absolutely! Urso should only be taken under medical supervision, I don’t imagine you could obtain it without a prescription. No medication is benign.

Just one observation. The article you’ve linked to is rather old, it’s published in 2012 so research may have moved on. However it does indicate that Urso has a role to play in PBC.

If you read my profile you’ll see that I have PBC as well as AIH and Alpha1 antitrypsin deficiency so am prescribed Urso for the PBC. If it can help me avoid Covid I see that as an additional benefit.

I’ll definitely be discussing this article with my consultant at my next clinic appointment, so thank you for sharing.
