Hi there, I've posted on here once or twice and just want to get thoughts on this. My mum is 79 I got her admitted to hospital 5 weeks ago as her alcoholism/symptoms were out of control and my 87 year old dad was clearly no longer coping. She caught covid in hospital and was in ICU on a ventilator for a week and a half. It's been a right battle to get her the right medical attention and she is now on a gastro ward. Her Fibro scan has come back as F3 with a score of 12.7kpa. I am told this is compensated and not end stage. However all the symptoms she has, suggest decompensated. She isnt eating and shows signs of confusion (which could be post ICU delirium but I suspect not). Is it possible that she could be decompensated given her frailty etc despite what the numbers show? Thank you for your thoughts.

Fibro Scan 3
Hi Guppy, sorry to hear about your mum, best to speak to your mums consultant at the hospital especially if your mum is quite frail you should be able to speak to them, seems like she has been through quite a lot xx
Thank you. The Dr I spoke to today didnt seem concerned though noted her "vagueness" and said he'd leave it a little and then order some cognitive tests. I find it hard to believe she isnt decompensated based on the lead up to hospital and her time there but I seem to be the only one thinking this. The Dr said maybe the symptoms seem worse because she is older than if in a 50 year old and her platelets are fine so I d9nt feel I can go further with it. They are talking about her having a feeding tube because she isnt eating. X
Hi, at least, they can check the ammonia levels in the blood to rule out the liver as the cause of her confusion. It's not always clear, but high blood ammonia is more in favor of a liver problem.
Thanks for flagging, I wonder if they have checked that. I'll raise it.
You may not wish to here this just maybe she’s had enough and wants to go. Ask her and honour her wishes. I know it sounds morbid but we don’t all want to live for ever it’s quality of life past and present that counts. All the best.
It's possibly her liver but unlikely.Definatly sounds like something else is going on but also sounds like she is too frail to go through a barrage of tests to find out what it is.
Hopefully she recovers her strength but be prepared for the hospital to suggest they switch to end of life care.
Thank you, it has been such a confused situation and you are right it could be something else going on. I hadnt properly considered what the approach might be and I do need to.
So sorry your mom (& you) have been through so much. It might be she has had a mild stroke after being in ICU from Covid. SARS Covid does affect the blood and there can be post covid blood clotting issues in some patients. However, I think the doctors would have picked up on this. But it’s worth asking the doctor, Also, reviewing her medications making sure they are not affecting her cognitive abilities. If she has been a heavy drinker the damage to her liver causing cirrhosis can cause brain fog and loss of appetite…as can post covid symptoms…long covid. Hope this helps.
Thank you for taking the time to reply. The consultant called me today wanting some background to whether my mum was displaying confusion before being in hospital. She said they were waiting results of a further liver scan as they seem to not be sure what's going on. I'll have to wait and see what happens x
