Swollen foot

My husband has ARLD.His foot is swollen, red and peeling. He says it isn't painful but certainly looks it. His ankles and keep swelling.

He is being treating for athletes foot but it looks much worse than that and isn't improving after bathing it and applying his steroid cream.

Had anybody else come across this please ?

I had a swollen foot as a result of in growing toe nail and fungus infection which turned nasty the swelling creeped up to my anckle, it was also extremely hot which signified infection, I had peeling and itching.Had the nail removed and anti biotics, all is ok now, get it checked with GP.

Regards Ant.

Is the swelling like fluid build up - oedema? Does he have diabetes? Not feeling it sounds a tad worrying if it looks sore to you. People with diabetes often suffer issues with extremities that they don't feel and can lead to serious complications. Tests required methinks.

I think you may be right about it being oedema. It isn't hot. The swelling is creeping up his legs now.

He isn't due to see his liver consultant until next march, so concerned he is deteriarating. He is sleeping a lot and not very mobile due to arthritis in his knee and back, which isn't helping.

He has lost almost 2 stone in last 12 months and isn't eating much at all.

His face and tummy are also swollen.

Sorry to go on but I am worried he doesn't seem to take it serious. He still drinks in excess of 20 bottles of strong beer a day.

Thank you for you help

It sounds like he's showing signs of decompensated cirrhosis if his tummy is filling with fluid too (possible ascites). This will require medical attention before March. He's headed down a very slippery path if the drinking doesn't stop.

He is due to go back to hospital this Thursday for a second polyp ectomy. He had 6 removed about a month ago so hoping to speak to his consultant then.It sounds awful but I feel I lost my amazing husband over 2 yrs ago when he was diagnosed with korsakoff. The only time he goes out is to medical appointments.

I miss our annual trips to the sunshine. So very sad.

I’m sorry to hear that. He really needs to stop drinking. If he doesn’t his symptoms are going to get much worse. I wish you the best.
