Husband with alcoholic cirrhosis

My husband was diagnosed with alcoholic cirrhosis in Dec 2019. He has developed a dry cough and pains in his upper left side. He is on several meds and legs swelled up real bad a couple of weeks ago. The swelling is being controlled with diuretics. Can this cough mean fluid is building up in his lungs? He also looks a little more yellow to me and has absolutely no energy. Are these signs things are getting worse. Thank you for any response.

Thank you.

Good afternoon Wife31,

Welcome to this friendly forum, I am sure you will get lots of support here.

May I strongly suggest that you arrange to have your husband clinically assessed by a doctor.

Any increase or new symptoms should be investigated so that they can be appropriately managed.

Best wishes,

Trust9

Hi Wife31

Firstly my recommendation if your husband has not seen a doctor since December and his legs have swollen up further is not to panic, take a deep breath and either call your GP practice, 111 or call the British Liver Trust Hotline and speak with one of there nurses. The line is open from 10am until 3pm for advice.

Both please take care

I would get his lungs checked out asap. With cirrhosis it could quickly turn into a chest infection then pneumonia.

Good wishes

Yes please see a Dr straight away, especially if he is more yellow. My brother had swollen legs and stomach and was in a real bad way, hospitalised for 7 weeks. Good luck and don't let anyone fob you off, insist!!!!

Sorry to hear how unwell your husband is.

For some, diuretics can cause low blood sodium levels as they appeared to do with my husband initially. This can be dangerous. I believe the condition is called hyponatremia.

There could be a myriad of reasons as to why your husband is suddenly feeling worse including infection and more.

As with the others, I do hope that you can get your husband to be seen by the specialists as soon as is possible so they can figure out what's going on.

Warm wishes.

Hi my husband was brought to the hospital on Tuesday with Hyponytremia. He has cirrhosis (MRI newly diagnosed) too but just dealing with the sodium levels first. Very scary when they go so dangerously low. Now sure of stages and where he is. I am looking for support. Thank you.

Hi, my husband was diagnosed in Dec 19. I am going through the same. Low sodium yellowing falling, just a list of things. They told me he had alcoholic hepatitis and that down the line may need a transplant. 4 months into this and he is so much better. Energy finally coming back although, sleepless nights and absolutely no sex drive. Not sure this will last but hopeful. Let me know how things are coming along for you. Thank you for posting.
