Bile is a fluid produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder that aids in the digestion of fats. Biliary obstruction is when the channels carrying bile from the liver and gall bladder into the small intestine (bile ducts) become blocked, and is most commonly caused by tumours or gallstones. This blockage may cause jaundice, nausea, and abdominal pain.
Endoscopic ultrasound-guided biliary drainage is when a thin tube called an endoscope with an ultrasound probe at the tip is passed through the mouth and into the stomach or small intestine. The blockage is located using sound waves and punctured; a small tube called a stent is then inserted into the blocked duct which allows the duct to drain into the gut. NICE are currently considering this topic and endoscopic ultrasound guided biliary drainage for biliary obstruction will be discussed at the next interventional procedure committee meeting.
