kidney function and ascites.

Hi,

my partner was recently turned down for transplant, as considered too high risk due to other health issues.

He has been having drains every 2-3 weeks usually 7-8 litres each time. His kidney function has recently worsened, this week, 3 weeks since last drain there was not enough fluid to drain. I would have thought that worsening kidney function would have meant more fluid retention.

He has now been taken off of diuretics so I expect fluid will increase but just wondered if anyone else had had worse kidney function but less fluid retention?

When the kidneys and liver are in trouble at the same time ( hepatorenal failure) it’s a much more complex situation than one organ. You need to sit down with the liver and renal doctors and decide on a treatment plan, they are the experts and won’t sugar coat the situation. Good luck

Thanks for your reply, we are hoping that we will be able to meet with doc at transplant hospital to discuss everything. Nurse at local hosp spoke to local gastro who said to stop diuretics, so wait and watch for now I guess.

Sadly diuretics can increase kidney damage, it’s a very fine balancing act to treat both organs at the same time, the specialists can do it successfully in lots of cases. Good luck, listen carefully and follow their advice. Write down anything you can think of ( doctors like it as it ensures everyone is on the same page)

I think everyone's journey is a little different.I had acute kidney injury , blood pressure 70 over 30, taken off Spiro and spent 2 scary weeks working on kidneys.I had a major variceal bleed and several bandings. I spent nearly a year having aesthetic drains, eventually 14 litres a week.Got a transplant on 4th call. 6 years ago now.I know it sounds crazy but People do come through and I never let myself believe otherwise.I was strong in asking for whatever was needed endoscopies etc Stay strong and believe.I hope all goes well.
