Hi, My partner has had a couple of transplant assessments at Birmingham, we also live 90 mins away.We stayed over for the 2 day part of the assessment as first day is a long day followed by an early start on the second day.
The hospital gave info on local hotels.
Hi, my assessment took 3 days and I stayed in hospital accommodation for this time. I was at addenbrooks in Cambridge, the accommodation was free for me and my husband but we had to pay for food. The first day is the hardest and most tiring, the second day involves a lot of sitting around waiting to see various consultants and the third is to see a psychiatrist but not everyone has to do this part and it is only for an hour anyway. Then you go home!
If you choose a hotel that's in the city centre, (maybe around Broad Street?) you can easily get a train or bus from New Street station and it stops at the hospital. This is a great idea if you want to enjoy Birmingham. It's such a lovely city and easy to walk around. We used to make a little break out of it for each of my appointments, as once your on the transplant list, it's almost impossible to go on holiday. He'll be treated extremely well at Birmingham, I've never known a hospital run as smoothly as this one does. Good luck x
Yes it does. The line is Birmingham New Street to Redditch. It stops at 5 Ways Station and the next stop is University Station which serves The Queen Elizabeth Hospital. There’s normally a shuttle bus between the station and The Queen Elizabeth. Otherwise it’s about a 5 min walk.
Hi,My husband was referred to Birmingham, and we live an hour and 30 minute drive away.
He was actually admitted as an inpatient for 5 days, on the 3rd day I went in for a couple of hours whilst they do a talk on the actual transplant itself, they give a lot of information.
After completion of all the tests, endoscopies, bloods, scans, X-rays, etc etc, They then meet, the whole team, and it’s the whole team that make the decision based on the results etc whether to add to the list or decline.
My husband was referred August 21, saw the consultant at Birmingham the beginning of November 21 and 2 weeks later admitted for assessment.
