Boldad unfortunately it does feel that way. Basically you have to make everything from scratch. Almost all refrigerated, frozen, and packaged goods has salt. It takes a while to get use to it because it makes everything taste good.

You'd be amazed how good food tastes without it. My favourite was ketchup and OMG Soya sauce on rice. Loaded with sodium.

Also I loved cream of mushroom soup, chicken noodle soup. Loaded with sodium.

Buy unsalted butter. Eat eat eat. Just try to go all around the outskirts of the grocery stores. NOT up and down the aisles. You'll be amazed. Make banana splits. Ice cream. Dark chocolate,nuts any kind, raisins. Always rye bread 6 grams maybe 8. Toasted unsalted butter,peanut butter. Popcorn. Do it old fashioned way. Buy bag of kernels. Olive oil. Shake pot. Smother with unsalted butter.

Also Mrs. Dash comes unsalted. Tastes the same. Theres so much more dear. Im not well thes days. Im almost 56. Also always remember the liver can rebuild itself, only organ. It's tough and very forgiving.🤗. Meaning you can make a few bad choices just give the liver some good. Eat as much green vegetables raw or semi cooked as u can. The heart likes beets. Garlic always a go. Steak. Yes HP Sauce a ok. Just use your head and instinct. Sincerely,

Hi 👋

Do you have a dietician? If not, really try hard to push for one. I was lucky enough to have a lady that was / is fantastic. Giving me amazing advice that I can pass onto you?

My ascites was huge, as I have previously mentioned think wrecking ball. I was never drained, so zero salt was to be part of my menu ☠ and being a 'salt head' was not easy, as you say salt is in everything.

The advice she gave me was it is impossible to have a zero salt free diet, plus the body does need sodium. She told me to look at anything, from a can of beans, to any drinks (obviously not alcohol). The advice she gave was under the nutritional breakdown on the items, look at p100g or p100ml salt as you are aware is at the bottom. Fir me personally I was advised abutting under 0.3g per 100g and 0.5g max!! I ruthlessly checked every single thing I ate and it's so depressing. I think Tesco *ahem - other brands are availible* less salt and sugar baked beans are 0.4g per100g. GET IN!! I even was looking at sodium in vegetables how mad is that ~ I was desperate to do anything to get rid of the ascites and pain it causes.

Anyway, I'm not sure if this is what you mean, otherwise I have dithered on for ages. BUT...if you can just bear with it because it helps! 'Kalko' low salt vegetable stock cubes, are good, spices, herbs, to jazz things up.

I lived on tealoaf for about 5 months, plus fruit and vegetable smoothies, baked pots and oooo 😲 there are crisps (heaven) that are called "salt & shake" they have no salt, but little blue sachets of it inside...chuck the sachets and pretend they are salted.

Also my last lap of this almighty post, is the fresher things are the less salt. Being used as preservative they tend not to have much.

Go forth and conquer 💪 the darkness of salt. It is pants, but you can do it and I used to put salt on my salt. 😁 Ask for a dietician.

Hi Kji378, I’m really struggling with the salt thing too. My ascites is drained 3 weekly & I am currently in a hospital bed typing this as I developed a hernia & part of my bowel became caught in it. After surgery, I developed an infection & ended up back in hospital vomiting & pooping blood (terrifying) - & was in icu for several days. I’m heading home tomorrow I think, but I need to desperately control the ascites. Any food tips you have, I’d love to hear them. I am trying another dietician as I cant cook at the best of times, but I’m determined to reduce it as I never want to go thru this again. I’m a salt lover & am finding it very difficult to find any sort of flavour enhancer.

Hi Kenny..Holy moly that sounds horrible, you poor bugger.

Is the ascites due to Cirrhosis, I'm guessing so because of the vomiting and blood, which I'm assuming was burst Varices? I hope that side is controlled now. I can't comment re hernia, hopefully someone might pop along to give their story regarding that.

Salt wise..I found something called 'Herbamare' Low Salt on Amazon, made by A.Vogel per 100g it is less than <0.3g if you want to add to cooking.

It's a case of just looking at the salt on the nutritional values part of EVERYTHING p100g and <0.5g or less is brilliant.

I can only repeat get a dietician as I am not qualified but can only suggest. I am sorry because it is horrible.

Are you on any diuretics?

This salt contains potassium chloride so if you’re taking spironolactone it can increase your potassium which is not good for you. You need to be very careful

Hi Katto 👋 Thank you for reply. Yes I understand and yes with spironolactone (I was on 300mg a day at one point now 100mg looking to stop after next Ultrasound due to no ascites) but absolutely, Potassium and sodium are difficult to manage as Spiro holds on to Potassium and reduces sodium. Very tricky if you are a salt head like me.

My dietician was wonderful, very mathematical and I recommend anyone should push for a dietician if they are not with one. I only had one 'dip' with my Potassium so I'm lucky, but my sodium was the worst.

as a bit of a treat now and then we have found tyrols naked crisps without salt at Ocado. A few of these with a home made avocado dip (no salt of course) is a nice treat
