Oral thrush & Prednisolone

Got oral thrush on my tongue for 2nd time & was prescribed Daktarin (miconazole) by nurse at GP surgery. First time I got it I used Nystatin. Nurse said it's the same stuff

Reading leaflet it says dont take if you've got liver problems. I've got AIH and taking pred & probably starting 6MP on Thusday.

Have any of you had oral thrush through taking pred & what did you take?

Is it safe taking Daktarin or shall I wait until Thursday when I see the liver nurse?

The thrush is on the side of my tongue & is quite sore

You absolutely don't want to be on Daktarin - my hubbies GP prescribed that and when we attended liver transplant unit they had an absolutely hairy fit that he'd been prescribed it. Yes, lots of drugs say not to take with liver issues but liver unit told us that this is one you absolutely MUST NOT take. It can seriously inflate your liver numbers etc.

Transplant unit immediately took hubby off it and gave him Nystatin to bring home with him.

Ah brilliant! It was weird she didnt prescribe Nystatin again.

I'll get back in touch tomorrow & get some Nystatin.

I'll say Dr Kate sent me!! 😂😂😂😂😂

Only joking .

I dont want my levels to go back up again . Its like a minefield trying to negotiate round everything & double checking everything. Its 100% worth it tho. It's important to stay safe.

Thanks once again for your help 👍😊

Deffo 'liver disfunction' is listed as a contraindication to taking Daktarin. You certainly don't want your number shooting up again as they are trying to get them down.

Just had my latest LFT bloods done today to show nurse on Thursday. This is the new gastro team & my new consultant will be there. He cant see me but she can pop in & see him for advice. They sound wonderful. A lot better than the other place. Hopefully they'll get me sorted out & get it under control.

Thank goodness I didnt take Daktarin 🥺

Could have messed things right up

With regards to meds, apart from some that exist that are just as said above, they usually say speak to your doctor. The issue with most drugs is not that they damage your liver but the dose and timing may need to be adjusted to accommodate the change in how long your liver may take to metabolise them.

Worth mentioning to be alert on pred, especially if you are on a high dose. I was out on 40mg a day and it functionally made me a type 2 diabetic with severe hyperglycemia( bs in the 30’s) and ketones so high they where shocked I was still functional and not in a coma and wanted to admit me then and there. You will likely be fine, but if you start feeling constant thirst etc it’s worth getting checked out. I only need room it as when I bought it up ( I wasn’t warned about it) it was along the lines of “ oh yes that can happen and we are terrible at highlighting it until symptoms show” 😑

It reversed after I stopped taking them, which was a wile as you have to titrate the dose down

It's surprising they dont check. Katie told me last night it's bad for liver by liver specialists after hubby given it by GP. I was given it be a nurse in GP surgery.

I checked today NICE (NHS guidelines) website & it said dont take if you have liver dysfunction.

You'd think medics sitting at a computer would see it?

It could have given me a really bad flare of my AIH.

Thank goodness I came on here to check

Thank you everyone 👏👏👏😊👍🥳

Hi just a bit of information when I had a very sore tongue I was told that it was because I had an iron deficiency, I’m no doctor so probably wrong but that’s what mine was. Good luck with it it is a real pain 😢.Stay Safe All
