Oral thrush

Hello folks - does anyone out there suffer with oral and/or vaginal thrush? I have both and believe this is not good news for the liver. I'm reluctant to take any more medication than I am already. What next, I ask myself - are bits of my body going to turn black and fall off?!!!

Hello,

Thrush is all around us and very common.

For a fit healthy person this isn't a problem and can be cleared up quite easily.

In liver disease the immune response simply isn't as it should be, so thrush is what would be described as 'an opportunistic' infection both pre and post-transplant.

During the post-operative recovery period, as a precaution, Oral anti-fungal medication is given routinely.

Before my transplant I had a bout of thrush which affected the throat all the way to the stomach. I was hospitalised for 7 days because I was unable to eat or drink.

An infection of this type combined with liver disease must be taken seriously and I would strongly advise you to seek an appointment with your GP.

Thanks Jim. The problem is I'm off to India on Sunday (got the ok to fly today from consultant) and it's unlikely I'll get a GP appointment tomorrow. In the meantime I'll treat it with coconut oil mouth wash and clove oil. Were you prescribed Nystatin for your thrush? If so I can get that from the pharmacy in Goa. Rest assured I won't take anything that may harm my liver.

Yes - Nystatin was the medication given both times. Post transplant it was 4 times daily for three months. They take thrush very seriously.

I'm pleased you've got your Goa trip sorted. Have a great time.

I had it severely yes in my eosphogus and gut when I was diagnosed. I was treated with anti if gals. Sometimes its the lesser of two evils which you have to accept . I had got malnutrition as no one had been aware until they saw it upon endoscopy , and was in great pain . I needed several courses, as it kept returning . I have always been prone to it throughout my life , but usually around the genitals not internally . I always do all I can to avoid antibiotics a they bring it on without question .

Thanks for that - I had no idea you could suffer so much with the same thing. I used yoghurt last night and it seems slightly better this morning. Jim was treated with Nystatin so I'll investigate that.

I had the Nystatin as well I forgot about that lol but I wanted to give you an instant solution and live yoghurt works for me just as well I am glad to hear it's working a little .. they may give you tablets to combat both but the yoghurt is great for cooling things down x

Hi

My son was prescribed Nystatin when he got thrush after surgery for Crohn's disease. He suffered terribly with it. Hope you feel better soon xxxx

Thanks Lynn. I'm in India at the mo hence delay in replying. The thrush is a lot better, thanks to loads of live yoghurt. But will get some Nystatin to see it off completely.
