Immunosuppressants and Covid

Hi, I'm sorry if this question has been answered in this group before but after a long hiatus I'm back to see if anyone has advice or experience of covid post transplant and on immunosuppressants.

During lockdowns I was on the shielding list and was able to work from home and have groceries etc delivered. Over much of the summer and post the last lockdown I've been to supermarkets, working in the office and even a festival for 4 days. Perhaps I was lucky but I've not caught covid yet.

Anyway as they're saying in the news, covid cases are highest they've ever been right now. I'm double jabbed and have a booster next week, but on the news they did mention immuno suppressed people being particularly vulnerable for obvious reasons. It's increased my anxiety as I have no idea what the likely outcome will be if I catch it.

There have actually been a number of members of the Autoimmune Hepatitis Facebook page who have had Covid even pre-vaccination and none have faired too badly - I don't think i've heard of any even needing hospital treatment (they are of course also on immune suppressants to keep their immune systems in check). It's still a case of keeping yourself as safe as possible.

The BLT has a page with up to date guidance and findings of the OCTAVE study which looked at vaccine efficacy (and more) in immune suppressed people.

Thanks for your reply Katie. Yes that does look positive.

Hi Joe,

We are glad to read that you are keeping well. Katie has shared the latest info on our Covid webpage with you on this thread. We would just add that it may be worth getting in touch with your doctor or nurse specialist at the hospital to discuss this, or even drop them an email?

Best wishes.

Hi I'm double jabbed and on immunsuppesents, I caught covid during a weekend away. I was ok for the first 4 days, It just felt like flu. But on the fifth morning I got up and then collapsed on the landing, my oxygen sats were 77%. Luckily my husband was home and called for an ambulance I was admitted to hospital and put on 5ltrs of oxygen, given steroids and antibiotics. After 10 days they weaned me off the oxygen and after two weeks I was sent home. However i was still struggling with my breathing and having chest pain when walking, so after two weeks I was readmitted. They diagnosed Angina, caused by covid affecting my heart. I was discharged after 5 days. I'm recovering slowly. I consider myself lucky, as I'm sure without the vaccine, things could have been a lot worse.
