My dad was diagnosed with alcoholic decompensated cirrhosis in May 2021. He stopped drinking since he found out and all his blood tests improved almost to normal levels, bilirubin dropped from 16 to 5, however earlier this week when he got to the hospital to have the liquid drained from his abdomen, the doctor suggest to stay in the hospital for a couple of days for more tests. Since he had it drained he stopped urinating and the doctor said he has developed Hepatorenal syndrome. They put him on treatment straightaway with terliprisin and albumin, started urinating again but still I am very scared. This sound like a serious problem if other organs stop working. Anyone here has ever been diagnosed with hepatorenal syndrome and was able to get it reversed with treatment??
Diagnosed with hepatorenal syndrome - British Liver Trust
Diagnosed with hepatorenal syndrome
Even if bloods return to normal he still has cirrhosis. If he has ascites and that needs draining it's decompensated and he is very sick.
Doctors can only treat the symptoms as they appear and some of those symptoms may involve other organs.
Unfortunately your correct, it's very serious.
Thank Roy for your reply. He’s being put on the transplant list, but not sure if he will be a priority. Very scared I might receive a phone call from my mum anytime soon saying he has past away…
Hi Simonamur - what happened how is your father now? Fingers crossed he's improving.
Hi Jim,
Thanks for asking! My dad is well now. Doctors treated him and stabilised those symptoms. Apparently the high creatinine levels in his blood caused hepatorenal syndrome, on top of that his glucose was over 500 they had to give him some insulin to bring it down under 120.
He is at home now due for another check up
In few days. They also been working on his file to put him on the transplant list.
