Well after being told last year I have NAFLD and further blood tests this year saying it has gone from moderate to severe ! The scan today shows I do not have a fatty liver ?

Has anyone had this before ?? I obviously need to go back to GP to understand why my blood show differently

ALT levels in liver and other bloods can go up and down all the time. Doctors usually do repeat bloods every 3 months for a while before sending you for a scan. Perhaps your GP was quick in referring you? Unfortunately for me my levels didn’t come down and I do have it.

This is my 3rd or maybe 4th blood test and it’s been going up each time last time when to severe - I guess another blood test and take it from there . Very strange

That is strange. Well good luck. My ALT was around 200 and all my other lipid profile was 3 times what it should be. Liver consultant wasn’t too concerned! I’m now on some meds and they’ve all come down to around double and it’s been stable like that for many years. I get regular scans (every 3 years) just to check and it’s not got worse in over a decade so I guess I’m lucky.

That’s great news :) what meds did they give you -I hope the GP doesn’t now ignore this and looks a bit further into why

What scan did you have? Ultrasound isn't the best at identifying early i.e. non fibrotic liver change. A fibroscan which includes the CAP / fatty change score would be more useful of a full set of blood tests which would allow the Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF test) or the FIB4 to be run.I don't think i'd be content to settle for a scan showing no damage when bloods say different.

It was a normal ultrasound - I asked GP about the fibrosis scan she said “oh I think they are only for people that drink “ bit worrying I will now go back to them

Here is our publication on NAFLD;britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) have devised guidelines with the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) that state people diagnosed with NAFLD should have further testing to assess for their risk of fibrosis- stiffening or scarring in the liver.

The specific blood tests are Fib-4 score blood test or an Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) blood test. A specific scan called a FibroScan also estimates fibrosis.

You may want to discuss this with your own GP who will be able to look up the NICE guidance.
