Hi everyone, looking for some advice on behalf of my husband. He had routine blood work about 4 months ago which showed increased liver enzymes. Follow up blood tests ordered by the GP and ultrasound are all clear, apart from his liver markers. The latest (and third) set of bloods show GGT over 450, and high ALP, AST and ALT (although coming down they were 5x normal levels at the start). The GP has now referred him to a hepatologist, although we are concerned about long waiting times. Is there anything we can do in the meantime to improve his liver health without there being an obvious cause? We're eating healthier and exercising more already. He's probably a little stressed by the situation, hasn't ever been good sleeper and has constant shoulder aches (which is probably not related to anything). Otherwise in good health.
He is 36, healthy bmi of around 22, exercises more than 3 hours a week, less than 2 beers a month but now cut out completely.
Any ideas, supplement recommendations or reading/podcast recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Any thoughts on what could be causing such a high GGT count? We are a bit surprised at the blood results, as is the GP, so are keen to learn more and try to improve his health naturally whilst waiting to see the specialist.
Thanks all.

I think you are doing all you can for now. Eating a bit more healthy and doing a bit of exercise are all good. If he drinks probably stop that for a while until you know whats going on.
Other than that just try and get on with things as best you can. There isn't really any supplements or anything that is likely to change anything. Dont believe the hype, lol. Also some supplements could even take attention away from the true cause.
Unfortunately some times these things can take a bit of time to get to the cause so he may have to be a patient patient.
Hi, I can understand your concern, but I'm sure his doctors would be hurrying up his appointments if they felt he needed it urgently. In regards to supplements I'd be very careful, as the liver is where everything is processed, and even herbal supplements can have a negative effect on it. I think you are both doing as much as you can at this stage, a good diet and exercise are a great start. Maybe if he drinks alcohol, even moderately, it may be a good idea to refrain until he's seen his consultant.
Please be careful about using Dr Google, otherwise you could worry yourself unnecessarily. The British Liver Trust site is probably your best bet, as you will get honest advice, and even though they can't help with clinical issues they do have a helpline you can call or email, which may put your mind at rest. Good luck, and let us know how he gets on, as his story may help someone else in the future.
