Hi all,

Is there any time when weight loss should be a cause for concern ?

The rule of thumb on this is normally UNEXPECTED weight loss. So if someone is consuming the usual number of calories but is losing weight there maybe cause for concern. Of course if they are being sick or have diarrhoea then you'd expect some weight loss and whilst this would be of concern, it wouldn't be unexpected. Its worth noting that how hydrated someone is can have a significant impact on weight. Lastly how sustained is the weight loss and is it significant. The NHS link below maybe helpful.

I'm guessing this maybe about your mum so as always with liver disease don't hesitate to escalate your concerns to the relevant Dr.

A decompensated liver can result in weight loss as the ability to digest and properly use nutrients is seriously compromised. This is often why small regular snacks are required to stop the body using up it's own reserves including critical muscle mass.
