Hi I’m on omeprazole is it safe to take if you got a bad liver doctor says it fine but it must be doing something to my liver like the long run etc
Omeprazole: Hi I’m on omeprazole is it... - British Liver Trust
Omeprazole
It’s a common drug. It is safe to give to people with liver disease. All this is relative though. You could ask if it is safe to eat custard. Most people will say YES. But then some others will say it is nearly always safe to eat custard but occasionally people choke to death eating it.
Apart from growing an extra leg and another ear it has been fine for me.
See above noting people with liver problems should speak to their doctor. I am in the same position and awaiting a response from consultant.

Thanks for the reply’s guys much appreciated
My hubby (with cirrhosis) has been on omeprazole since 2012 - prescribed by his hospital consultant to help his oesophagus and stomach lining which are both affected by portal hypertension - varices, portal hypertensive gastropathy and since 2014 to protect his stomach from effects of prednisolone steroid which he takes for AIH.

I would really like to see the answer you get for this question because I'm wondering the same thing I have stage 4 cirrhosis and I've been taking Omeprazole for at least 20 years and I really think it's cause me problems.I still take it because the horrible thing about taking it is they don't tell you that once you're on it it's nearly impossible to get off of it it's absolute hell to try to get off of that stuff the heartburn is so bad in the acid it's unbearable if I miss more than a day of the omeprazole. I'm curious to see if somebody answers your question I hope they do
I see the response that you're getting from your question and I have to ask could Omeprazole possibly cause fatty liver or liver disease? It seems quite a few people that have liver disease are on it I'm seeing a pattern here
There are studies on Internet which state it can contribute to liver disease. I guess there is a risk to all drugs and its about trying to find balance. It is frustrating thinking that you could be weakening an already struggling organ. But if you don't take it as there is no real safe proton pump alternative (as far as I am aware) are you are more risk of barrats disease. Balance, we all need to be led by the professionals.
