Cholesterol 9.6!!

Hi all.

I just have a question for you and I hope you can help. Recovering alcoholic here. Had my bloods done last week. All came back normal except my cholesterol, which is 9.6.

I understand a damaged liver can cause high cholesterol. My question is, would my liver tests also show something if it were affecting my cholesterol, or could these still come back normal?

Hi Choochooboogie and welcome to this friendly forum. Can I ask if you have had a fasting full lipid profile? You may want to discuss this with your GP as a full lipid profile breaks your results down into good cholesterol (HDL) bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides (if this is high, you may want to consider making changes to your diet). In terms of your liver, I can't comment on your results individually but you may want to consider discussing an ultrasound with your GP, to rule out any permanent scarring. I've attached a couple of links which you may find useful.

Thank you 😊

Just to say back when I used to be a very heavy drinker mine was 6.7 and ALT also slightly raised. I stopped and my cholesterol went down to 4.2. . Showed my liver was sluggish and struggling.

Hi Pam. Thanks for your reply. I hadn't drank for about a week before the test, but I'm sure that's not long enough to bring it down. My other results were fine though, which is what is confusing me.

Mine took 3 months to go down. Just dont drink and you should see a big difference. My alt also went back to normal.

It took 3 months for your cholesterol to go down?

in reply toChoochooboogie

Yes.... I ate healthy and stopped drinking all together and my liver must have shredded the fat (everyone that drinks a lot has a fatty liver) and recuperated. Drinking puts a strain on the liver and when it’s under strain it can’t break down cholesterol in the blood so it builds up. I think you may be pleasantly surprised on your retest... I mean it could be a hereditary issue but as you say you were recovering alcoholic then the odds are it’s high through the drinking.

I mean I’m saying it took 3 months but it could have been sooner....it just that the space of time between my first test and second was 3 months.
