Does anyone know if a HIDA scan can show abnormalities of the liver? I know it isn’t the ultimate in diagnostic imaging for the liver.
Thank you!

I think it shows how the blood is flowing. Mine adequate blood flow but found bile backing up into the stomach and that’s about all it had to say about my liver. Didn’t really get me anywhere except to say that it wasn’t my gallbladder.
Hello Lonelyinthis,
I have extracted this information from the Royal Berkshire NHS info:
A HIDA scan is a nuclear medicine study used to evaluate your gallbladder function. It is also used to look at the bile excreting function of your liver and to track the flow of bile from your liver into your small intestine.
A HIDA scan might help in the diagnosis of several diseases and conditions, such as:
· Gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis)
· Bile duct obstruction
· Congenital abnormalities in the bile ducts, such as biliary atresia
· Postoperative complications, such as bile leaks and fistulas
· Assessment of liver transplant
I hope this helps,
