Portal Hypertensive Gastropothy

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had any advice/information that will stop me stressing!

I have had diarrhea for 5 months and am losing weight (1.5 stone). GP referred me for to the colon people who decided to do gastroscopy and colonoscopy as I've been feeling sick and stomach pain.

Colon was fine (thank goodness) but they found portal hypertensive gastropothy (without bleeding). Nothing was explained to me at the time (well, I had been sedated so don't remember much) and my gp just said he will refer me to hepatology and that my liver test results were normal. I did have a CT scan on Sunday just gone where they injected me and my gp said I will get the results to my house.

I am anaemic (which I often am) and I still have diarrhea.

Unfortunately I googled. And am now panicking a bit.

Can I have portal hypertenive gastropothy and there be no cause (as my liver tests are ok)?? Does anyone have this and there is a different reason for having it??

I think I would just like to not stress but that may not be anything you can help with ;) ;)

Thank you for reading my stressy post!

Welcome to our merry band sunnyrainy.

Well first off there is such a thing a non-cirrhotic portal hypertension which might be what is going on here. (fingers crossed).

But until you get the results of your CT scan back you won't know, sadly even in advanced cirrhosis it is possible for blood results to come back ok where the liver is stable. The most common cause of portal hypertension is related to liver disease.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you and hope you get some answers from your medical team a.s.a.p.
