Fibroscan cancelled this morning!!

I was due to have my fibroscan at 10.30 this morning and at 8am I had a telephone call to cancel as the person who does the scans called in sick. Ridiculous that only one person is trained to do these scans. I worked in public service for twenty years and we always had at least one other person trained to take over absent staff’s job. So disappointing after waiting three months for this and now have to wait again

Good morning Dyffrynaur,

I am sorry to hear your frustration at your Fibroscan cancellation.

I am sure the practitioner who was to carry out your scan is equally as frustrated.

Fibroscanning is often part of the extended role for the nurse and takes a significant time to train to be able to carry out competently.

I am sure you will appreciate the significant pressure the staff within the NHS are under, and I am sure the decision to cancel you test wasnt taken lightly, as this will obviously have an accumulative effect on the waiting lists.

If you are concerned , perhaps you could enquire about other forms of fibrosis monitoring which doesnt involve a scan eg Fib4. Your hepatology consultant will be able to advise.

Best wishes,

Thank you for your reply. I don’t have a Hepatologist as I was diagnosed by my rheumatologist. I have apparently been referred to a gastroenterologist with liver interest but have had no communication from him in the three monthS since I was diagnosed with PBC. From what I read on the internet Fib4 is used in cases of hep c and Nash so wonder if it would be suitable for me. I just feel so neglected and alone and am worrying constantly until I can get some idea of the amount of liver damage I have. I have cancelled a holiday to have this scan which causes even more frustration for me

I am sorry to hear this !

May I suggest you speak with your GP re the gastro/hep referral ? Is there a nurse specialist you could liaise with perhaps?

You can also call our nurse led helpline on 0800 652 7330 Mon-Fri 10am-3pm .

We would be happy to talk things through .

Take care,
