In 2010 after my sister died I had very bad depression. I was referred to a psychiatric Dr as my GP was unsure about prescribing antidepressants due to my liver. I have PBC, and at that stage early cirrhosis. After many attempts it became obvious that all the antidepressants we tried affected my LFT. I'm pretty sure sertraline was one of them. I think they all say use with caution in liver disease.

As with all drugs, it's a risk v benefit. If you need the drugs, then minor changes in your lft may not be a concern. They may settle after time. You can't be 100%certain the elevation is caused by that drug either. Do you have a known liver condition?

Talk to your GP, Do Not stop taking the drug without advice (SSRIs require tapering down, stopping suddenly can be dangerous). It may have nothing to do with medication, and only making a plan with your Dr will determine that.

Take care

Hi raenata, as Wass71 said, I was stopped taking sertraline, when diagnosed with F4 cirrhosis because of the damage it could do to my liver, but I'm not sure if it affected GGT and ALT. My GGT was 1384 when first diagnosed. I do also take prescribed folic acid every day to keep up my vitamin B levels,

Hope this helps.

Yes, I was on sertraline briefly Sept/Oct last year. I developed severe all over body itching, nausea, fatigue, night sweats. Blood test showed abnormal LFTs. I've had numerous investigations that haven't shown much, but I'm still unwell and LFTs still abnormal. Additionally since Dec I have also suffered from sudden explosive diarrhea. Before all this I was in good health.

Hmm I wonder if Sertraline has contributed for both of us..

That was my doctors first thought. It's been over 6 months since I stopped taking it and my bloods are still abnormal. I'm surprised as I only took sertraline for about 5 weeks. I've never taken it before and I wish I hadn't, but I was hoping it would help me after unexpectedly and suddenly losing my son. I've been off work over 10 months now, don't feel any closer to a diagnosis and have nothing to help treat the symptoms. How are you?

O man I’m so sorry about your son - that is really hard, especially unexpectedly. I took it when my baby needed surgeries but wish I didn’t now too! You don’t drink alcohol do you? I used to but stopped.

Hope your baby is well. I can't say I've never drunk alcohol, but it's quite rare. So, no I'm not and never have been a drinker.
