Hi all, interested if anyone has experience of protein shakes for weight loss? I've researched them before and a lot of them are full of rubbish but I've come across these thefast800.com/meal-replace... . They're vegetarian or vegan based and seem to have a good balance of low sugar, low carbs, low salt and high protein plus loads of vitamins. Not too expensive either if you replace one meal a day. Anyway-I will try them and report back on efficacy etc...They seem pretty ideal for folk with liver issues on the face of it.

Diet Shakes for weight loss
Caveat
When large quantities of protein supplements are consumed over a long period, there is an increased risk of developing renal disorders. Impairment of kidneys, kidney stones, and renal failure are the probable side effects of taking protein supplements in excess quantities.🙄
Protein shakes may be an effective way to temporarily lose weight for some, but so is a healthy diet and exercise. Any extremely restrictive diet program should only be attempted with the guidance of your physician.🤔
Be careful to read the ingredients on any weight loss supplement before you begin the program, and know your own potential reactions and sensitivities. If you feel extremely dizzy or nauseous, or if your vision gets blurry, stop the program immediately. Drink a quickly digesting carbohydrate-rich beverage, like fruit juice, or eat some fruit, and then call your doctor.🤔
Partners dietician prescribed a German branded protein drink for specific gastro conditions. It was then abruptly removed from her script due to it's undisclosed sugar content. It was never replaced. 🙄
fair comment
evidence please? this is a myth, i can find no studies confirming this and plenty that dont. google dr. don leyman/protien or is it Lehman.
This is advertising and has no place on a forum dealing with liver disease. You really need to take advice from a qualified dietician, preferably a NHS one.
it was a polite question to the forum
Don’t worry about it. Some people in life are quite prickly and see the negative in most things in life and not just on here either.
There are people who’ve been quite negative for want of a better word and actually changed their name.
But as the old saying goes a leopard never changes it’s spots!
I agree with you. I’m sorry that you had an impolite reply. Luckily they’re rare. Thank you for your post! It interests me when people decide to take these shakes. I like food so much 😋that I couldn’t swap I single meal for one! 😊
Cheers fili yes I think all these things are worth exploring.
Agreed. The most useless article is a closed mind. Keep exploring!

feel free to remove my post @Trust if appropriate? I'm not advocating the product it's just a question
The post can stay as it is prompting an interesting and valid discussion. As ever, we would suggest if you have a liver condition to speak with your own liver specialist for guidance first, and they will often refer on to a hospitall dietitian for a specific plan.
thanks you trust1 when I get a specialist I will certainly do that...
There is a difference between high vitamin meal replacement shakes and high protein supplement shake.
I think both can be good for different stages of liver disease but i have also read too much protein can be bad for someone with cirrhosis. I have also read that some people with cirrhosis need their diet and nourishment Taylor made for them personally.
Youd be much better asking a professional regarding supplements,
I used to lift weights and suppliment and some of these protien shakes taste very good. Before you know it youve consumed 150grams pf protien in 3 drinks which is good after the gym but could be dangerous for one with liver disease. 👍🏼
I’ve been on a vegan protein shake 3 times a day, with vegetables for lunch and tea. It was a diet shown on this forum and in gastric band patients, it seemed to reverse their type 2 diabetes and reverse fatty liver. So it’s only for 8 weeks and I’m on 8 th week and have lost 1 st 10 lb. it works out 850cal per day. I have halved most of my meds. I am due a diabetic test but not sure if I should go near the gps because of virus. I’m going to replace the shake ingredients 206cal with other proteins and carbs. I’ll see how it goes.
that's very interesting Julie-many thanks
Hi Briccolone
I think the best and healthiest way is to make your own as you can put in all the ingredients you require cutting out the need for any preservatives or extra salt or sugar for flavouring.
That's easy for me to say though because it's been my wife that through all the different needs at different stages of my illness that has done all the chopping and blending and dealt with all the mess that ensues.
So I can see to be able to buy in the healthiest options make sense if you don't have the time or inclination to want to go through all that kitchen mayhem .
Hope the protein shake works out well for you.
All the best
Alf
thanks Alfred-trying both tacks I think....I've already lost 9kgs through conventional means but looking to lose another 9 at least so things like shakes may help. I don't have a diagnosis as yet so feel empowered to self experiment.
Ops another drawback with the shakes they're temporary. Shake it off & on again. 🙄
I feel Shakey enough as it is tbh
You're doing really well. You can reach a place where weight loss sticks for a while so changing tactics can help in getting the weight loss moving again.
Through eating healthily and losing weight throughout my liver illness I also got the benefit of entering remission from the diabetes 2 that I had suffered from for 20 plus years.
Good luck with it all
Not sure on protein shakes but I do use a meal replacement/liquid meals
About 3 months ago I started using huel for breakfast and lunch during work days as I work in hospitality I rarely get time for proper meals.
The convenience of it has really helped me get more balanced with my diet and has stopped me loading on food when I get in late at night. And with it being vegan and all natural I don't see much harm it could have.
However as always speak to your gp or your nutritionist before making big changes.
