Could I have Cirrhosis at 28?

Hi, I'm an active, fit and healthy 28 year old but I've not been myself for around 2 months now. I initially went to my GP as I was experiencing sharp pains in my head and nausia and dizziness. I had a scan in my head which was clear aswell as blood tests. My ALT was midly raised at 54. For a week or so after my scan I felt fine and thought I may have just had a virus so carried on as usual. Since then I have started to experience increased nausia, right side pain front and back, mild itching at night aswell as slight darkening round the eyes. I have returned to my GP who has sent me for further bloods and an ultrasound of my abdomen, I now have to sit and wait worrying like crazy. I dont drink at all in the week but admittedly binge drink on the weekend, however nothing excessive.

Is it possible to experience symptoms and not have cirrhosis as I've obviously been reading up about the fact that once symptoms are present it's too late to repair.

Thanks in advance

Hi Davey. At your age it's highly unlikely you have cirrhosis unless you have an underlying liver condition which your binge drinking will not be helping at all. So to stop yourself worrying between now and your checks you need to stop drinking completely, eat healthily and stay active. Over the weeks and months to come your liver will start to improve if there's no serious damage. Drink plenty of water to keep flushing away the toxins.

Good luck let us know when you've had your tests and results but stay off the booze !

Excellent. Well done just keep it up. I'm sure you'll be fine . Looks like you will have caught any major problems in time. Life is so much better without booze. You can remember a good night out the next morning without feeling rubbish, save yourself a fortune and none of the worry about what damage you could be doing to your liver and general health.... happy days 😀

Hi there yes you can certainly have symptoms without having cirrhosis. Many of the symptoms of fatty liver for example are similar to some serious liver conditions. As Laura says let's see what the tests say?

I had my blood test results back today which were a bit concerning. My ALT has raised to 75 and GGT reading 116.

This blood test was taken five days after a weekend away drinking a fair bit. (Obviously i haven't touched a drop since)

I'm still experiencing pain on my right side and get waves of nausea. I am however feeling less tired and feel like i have more energy

The doctor has told to me carry on as I am exercising, eating well and staying well clear of the booze but this has just made me even more worried.

He want me to do more bloods in around 10 days time and I've got my ultrasound in 3 weeks.

I'm trying to stay positive but really I'm worried sick!

Not what you're looking for?
