Hi all, I have no desire to add to the general impending sense of doom but anyone have any thoughts on hand sanitizers (alcohol based)-which my company has now installed. I've been using them as I use the london Undergound everyday-no ill effects so far but anyone with bad experience of them?

Prior to the hype not recommended as a replacement to good old soap and hot water scrub up.

Backup alternative when soap & water is unavailable.

Washing your hands with soap and water physically removes the germs; they bond with and wash down the drain with soapy lather.

Sanitizer just spreads it about.🤔

yeah -agree with that

From Health and Safety Laboratory report 2014

“The use of soap and warm running water for hand washing remains an effective method for reducing the levels of hand borne microbiological contamination. The use of soap and cold running water has also been shown as effective for hand decontamination, though is likely to be marginally less effective than soap and warm water.

Alcohol preparations based on either gels or liquid hand rubs can offer a significant reduction in microbiological hand contamination, with some studies claiming multi-log reductions under specified conditions that are greater than hand washing approaches. However, there are important limitations to how alcohol rubs and gels should be used, and these may introduce uncertainties regarding their efficacy.”

That’s just FWIW - I’m sure there are lots of publications out there along similar lines, or even having completely differing views! Who knows - Not I that’s for sure. I mean it’s the same situation about masks isn’t it. Waste of time apparently yet in China they were arresting people in Wuhan for not wearing them...

Oops sorry not really about liver disease except that those of us on immunosuppressants and are elderly and have other underlying conditions - so that’s quite a few of us I guess - are vulnerable aren’t we!!

I blame Brick for winding me up on this 😀😀. (Only joking Brick! It’s close to my heart because I’m supposed to be having an op at QEHB next week. 🤞🤞 it doesn’t go into lockdown.....)

Oh efficacy well on topic. Most Gel's 70% alcohol.

What's the first thing one tends to do applying the hospital stuff, stick your hands to your nose for a good sniff.

Masking it. 😷 No seal of approval 👎

hehe the reason I ask about alcohol is before I even started having liver issues-certain hair treatments commonly used by Barbers used to make me feel a bit weird-Portuguese oil or friction as it's known which I think has a high alcohol content,

in reply to

Sniffing it? Hmm.... Anything else to declare? 😉

Makes your eyes water too. Back for anor sniff @ 14:15. Hope that's the only sniffles I get. Skip the free corona. 🙄

For my two pennies worth it should be noted that only the alcohol based hand sanitisers are worth using.

All the other types of hand sanitiser do not kill the virus.

As everyone has already said hand washing first is best but the sanitiser do work.

I think they are OK for when you are out and about with no access to soap and water. Just give your hands a good wash when you get home. They are certainly better than nothing.

You really should wear a mask on the tube, the air is thick with all kinds of noxious dust.
