Hi all, I have no desire to add to the general impending sense of doom but anyone have any thoughts on hand sanitizers (alcohol based)-which my company has now installed. I've been using them as I use the london Undergound everyday-no ill effects so far but anyone with bad experience of them?
Covid-19: Hi all, I have no desire to... - British Liver Trust
Covid-19
Prior to the hype not recommended as a replacement to good old soap and hot water scrub up.
Backup alternative when soap & water is unavailable.
Washing your hands with soap and water physically removes the germs; they bond with and wash down the drain with soapy lather.
Sanitizer just spreads it about.π€
yeah -agree with that
From Health and Safety Laboratory report 2014
βThe use of soap and warm running water for hand washing remains an effective method for reducing the levels of hand borne microbiological contamination. The use of soap and cold running water has also been shown as effective for hand decontamination, though is likely to be marginally less effective than soap and warm water.
Alcohol preparations based on either gels or liquid hand rubs can offer a significant reduction in microbiological hand contamination, with some studies claiming multi-log reductions under specified conditions that are greater than hand washing approaches. However, there are important limitations to how alcohol rubs and gels should be used, and these may introduce uncertainties regarding their efficacy.β
Thatβs just FWIW - Iβm sure there are lots of publications out there along similar lines, or even having completely differing views! Who knows - Not I thatβs for sure. I mean itβs the same situation about masks isnβt it. Waste of time apparently yet in China they were arresting people in Wuhan for not wearing them...
Oops sorry not really about liver disease except that those of us on immunosuppressants and are elderly and have other underlying conditions - so thatβs quite a few of us I guess - are vulnerable arenβt we!!
I blame Brick for winding me up on this ππ. (Only joking Brick! Itβs close to my heart because Iβm supposed to be having an op at QEHB next week. π€π€ it doesnβt go into lockdown.....)

Oh efficacy well on topic. Most Gel's 70% alcohol.
What's the first thing one tends to do applying the hospital stuff, stick your hands to your nose for a good sniff.
Masking it. π· No seal of approval π
hehe the reason I ask about alcohol is before I even started having liver issues-certain hair treatments commonly used by Barbers used to make me feel a bit weird-Portuguese oil or friction as it's known which I think has a high alcohol content,
Sniffing it? Hmm.... Anything else to declare? π
Makes your eyes water too. Back for anor sniff @ 14:15. Hope that's the only sniffles I get. Skip the free corona. π
Corona beer, all beer wines and spirits: no tax increase. Whisky industry? Β£30 m boost from the treasury. US govt to be lobbied to remove tariff from whisky. O dear! What a great day for livers.
it's keeping the economy going otherwise everything will tank
Taxing Brain drain to deliver. Makes me sick, says the Poacher. π
We can all be tanked at this rate βΊοΈ
Thanks miles good luck with the op- fyi my company which is a well known newspaper is preparing all kinds of contingencies. π
Bet it isnβt the one I read then π. Contingency A look at what P H is doing if megxit isnβt around. Contingency B if neither are around look at what A is doing π.
I can just about concentrate long enough to read their simple summaries π
sounds like the newspaper I used to work for....
Coronavirus: Australian newspaper prints extra pages to help out in toilet paper shortage
NT News, known for its humorous front pages, produces a special edition amid panic over loo roll shortage.
I find the Metro quite useful in this respect-used to work for them as well.....
For my two pennies worth it should be noted that only the alcohol based hand sanitisers are worth using.
All the other types of hand sanitiser do not kill the virus.
As everyone has already said hand washing first is best but the sanitiser do work.
In the old days, hot water and carbolic soap did the trick, they knew what they were doing back thenπππ
David
I think they are OK for when you are out and about with no access to soap and water. Just give your hands a good wash when you get home. They are certainly better than nothing.
yes that's my view-the Tube is filthy at the best of times-they should install them in stations tbh
You really should wear a mask on the tube, the air is thick with all kinds of noxious dust.
Tubes -
in biology, any hollow, cylinder-shaped structure in the body that carries air or liquid:
the bronchial tubes
Just refrain from off-loading content, and sharing it all with friends, family, and the world on uTube. π
also very true
These companies that make sanitizer must be rubbing their hands
I see what you did there..,
just been informed that someone who works on the same floor as me is being treated for suspect covid-19 -not confirmed. as a result we're all working from home for the near future plus deep clean whole floor tomorrow morning-I'm self banishing myself to the loft with laptop although some might prefer if I self isolate from this forum...
Don't go sh1t a brick alone. π
calm as you like-totally predictable

Youβre going to think of something Iβm sure!
Sorry brick it really was a poor joke on my behalf ππ. Really sorry to hear that π€π€ you are OK.
Yes mate fine purely precautionary - me and about 200 others hey ho
You could watch day time tv. Professor Francois Balloux (really) just told pierce moron that he personally thinks self isolation and cancelling huge gatherings of people should be the order of the day.
We that's what the Italians are doing out of necessity. Hopefully we'll Dodge that bullet but I can see it happening
Do you want to buy and do up Scalextric cars? I can advise you....how to lose a fortune...Hehe. This time next year I was going to be a millionaire π. You should see the rubbish I spent my pension on thanks to HE - well thatβs my excuse ππ
You tryin to advertise your cars for sale Miles? This isnβt Craigβs List yβknow. π
