Yoyo platelets

Some of you may know of my tooth saga!! Quick recap, I cracked a tooth whilst eating an ice cream in Germany last year (it had little coffee beans in it). The dentist tried to save it, but it was too broken. She wouldn't remove it in the surgery due to low platelets. I waited 8 months for an appt, to be told the tooth has signs of chronic infection so they need to make a plan, and involve my transplant Dr's.

My Hepatologist said my platelets were sufficiently low enough to justify a pre load of platelets, they had been around the 50 mark for the last 4 months. So bloods were tested at clinic (2 weeks ago) and found to be 48. The dentist said 50 and over was OK, but under that would need an infusion. So weds this week they were re tested (different lab, but taken at the hospital, rather than gp surgery), they are now 64!!! So luckily no need for platelets. I've just got to go an hour before for some antibiotics.

Anyway, this shows how bloods can vary from one week to the next, who knows what causes these changes??

That's what I found Wass. My platelets were 33 when first diagnosed with cirrhosis, but now they are around 54, so whether my spleen is working a bit better than it was, I don't know. I still have clotting problems though.

My understanding is the platelets are being made, just the enlarged spleen is holding on to them?? Maybe if there is less inflammation then maybe they can get into the blood stream. Not sure if I've understood that correctly. If anyone knows different please let me know???

I think my clotting is a bit off too. I got two blood blisters from the tape they used after my blood test, crazy!!

Thanks for the info......I wonder why it won't release them?????

I get the blood blisters every time. They even kept me behind after my contrast CT scan because the cannula site wouldn't stop bleeding. Just a tiny knock brings a huge blood blister under the skin with no bump, but that might be old age ????

Hi Elisa.

I hope that it all goes well tomorrow and with straight forward healing after.

Thanks Alf, I'm hoping it all goes to plan. I suppose I should contact the TP coordinators, to let them know?? What do you think?

You could ring and ask what they think.

The thing is everything could go great and you could be healed up fairly quickly, but it would be devil to get 'that call' within say 3 or 4 days of the extraction.

I'm not sure how long they would want to take you off the list for.

There's a small chance a tooth extraction doesn't count, but with the problems you've had with that tooth I imagine that it would.

One of the first things that they ask you when they ring for transplant is are you feeling well? (meaning have you got anything like a cold or flu or anything that could endanger your chances of an uncomplicated transplant) and have you got any open wounds .

I think it's best to ring and ask :-( :-(

Yes I will, they did say they want to know everything. Although the three calls I've had, they've asked about illness, any tummy issues, but never about open sores. I am being given a pre IV antibiotic infusion. I have to get to my appointment 1 hour early for it.

With that infusion hopefully it will heal very quickly and it's just a glitch for a few days.

Or maybe (fingers crossed) an tooth extraction wouldn't hold a transplant up?

Here's hoping! :-) :-)

You've kept your mojo yo-yo or not.

Respect. 👍

My platelets have been low and fluctuating for several years. At haematology clinic doctor told me the likely cause is PBC and also the fighting of infection that is not apparent externally, just quietly going on behind the scenes. I used to bruise a lot. I don't bruise since I've been taking Vitamin K from Natto. Vitamin K is often lacking in our diet due to the soil being depleted of nutrients as a result of chemicals sprayed on the land. Anyhoo, that doesn't help you with your tooth and I'm sorry you still are suffering. I blame the fairies. They're all working to rule and you can't get a tooth out until there's a fairy near to collect it from under your pillow. I hope this is all on topic :-) xxxx

I do live near Glastonbury, so the fairies could all be hanging out up the Glastonbury Tor, playing on the land lines. They've got a lot to answer for those rascal!!

Funny how these platelets go up and down!

My spleen is now a normal size but my platelet count is still low although my cirrhosis is very stable!

Constant bruising just turns up from nowhere!

even though my bleeding issues has been resolved.

I think if I ended up in hospital they would think I was a battered wife😂

Good Luck from me too for later!

Plus lots of fairies by your side 🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️

Survived the ordeal!! I've got 5 days of antibiotics. I was well numbed for the procedure so no pain, but a lot of pulling. Now the local has worn off Ive been in excruciating pain. Feels like my jaw has been broken.

On the plus side, the bleeding has so far been minimal. They packed and sutured it, and I've got some drugs to use if it does bleed. Got to attempt to clean my teeth now, I'm scared. It turns out I'm totally feeble, I think my body had just had enough of pain!!

Thanks for all the amazing support, as ever you guys are great.

Hugs to all x
