3D Printing produces liver tissue for Transplants

I found this article about 3D Printing of liver tissues of interest and decided to share it.

In this case, only one of the 500 functions of the liver was tested, but it shows great promise for creating tissues that could be used for transplants, of which there is a vast shortage.

The Americans who worked on this technology have elected to make their findings open source, in the hopes that other bioengineers will build on their work and speed up the discovery of a viable alternative to cadaver organs for transplant.

Now that is indeed interesting boot! And it’s easy to read for a person like me who struggles to concentrate on overly long epistles 😀

Let’s hope these early trials progress to the real world 👍

Scientific American is very good at breaking down complex subjects into easily digested articles, and readers can always find the abstracts they're published from for more detailed information. That is, if difficult to read, technical abstracts are more your style! 👍😁

I already wrote in the forum. I think this method is more promising than stem cells.

That's awesome! Sorry I missed it Ocean. Please link to your post.

But doesn't this technique use liver cells as well? My understanding is that these new technologies are not exclusive to one another, but I haven't gotten far enough yet to understand how exactly they work together.

I understand the problem to be the vasculature of the liver. I found the article while looking for info about the 500 functions of the liver! So far, I have a clear idea of about five of them... 🤔

Hi Bootandall. Who would have thought ten years ago that any of this would be possible? Medical science is moving on so swiftly and the speed is accelerating. It will be great for those requiring transplants in the future. Regards. Alf
