That’s an absolutely brilliant achievement and well done to you for giving yourself the best, fighting chance! I don’t know about you but while it took the massive shock of liver disease to finally quit, it’s the best thing I ever did. I keep delighting in telling people I love being an early to bed early to rise sort now who makes the most of each and every day!

Hope you find a good way of celebrating your soberversary!!

Beth 😊

Well done!!! I'm just at 3 months, and thankfully not struggling too much, but I find I avoid people and places these days, which is a shame. Any good tips very gratefully received, you should be extremely proud of your strength and determination 😘👍

in reply toerica1960

Are you avoiding pubs? If so I would say that’s not a bad thing until you are more comfortable with the not drinking scenario. Personally found it took a year or so when

I stopped caring. But we are all different! 😁.

Good luck with staying off drink.

Tips - you always need to be on your guard as the research is out there showing that ex-drinkers who have “just the one” or try to moderate invariably end up drinking again long term. I was shocked to read such relapsing can happen decades later. In this hot weather, I often feel like a beer, although this urge is greatly reduced from my drinking days, but I know I’d then want a beer the next day and the next. That urge passes in a few minutes, so best ignore it.

I told my friends I was alcohol dependent so won’t be drinking any more. I can still meet them. They’ll drink their beers. I’ll have something else. If I felt tempted to drink in such situations, I would regrettably have to steer clear.

Your advice is contradictory, you were telling Yooks to celebrate their wedding day with champagne?

Bootandall profile image

I would like to think a champagne toast at a once in a lifetime event was a slighty different thing, but there are non alco wines, so I see your point.

It just doesn't seem appropriate to this thread, sounds a bit mean-spirited, not like you? I 'm sorry, don't mean to offend you. Take care.

To give some context, here’s Yooks’ thread. It’s good to have the facts.

Ah yes, that is good, and I understand your feeling defensive. I think encouraging someone healthy and not alcohol dependent to moderate their intake by having small glasses of champagne at their wedding was very responsible and not contradictory at all.

Hi Erica. Rather than avoiding people & friends altogether which as you say is a shame, how about meeting up in places where alcohol isn't available like coffee shops? Let your friends know you can't drink anymore and why, real friends will support you and may even join you in quitting ... how good would that be?

Fill what would have been your drinking times with other interests, gym, walking, book up up a college course in september maybe? There's so much to do out there where you can enjoy yourself without having to drink. Always carry a bottle of water with you wherever you go too.

You've done brilliantly so far so well done. You WILL keep it up

Hey total respect - I am just two months in and this is inspiring me. It was make or break for my liver despite not in my mind drinking that much. Just shows you. I decided make over break before the consultant had finished speaking. Massive congrats and for the inspire.

Well done you massive achievement!!

I’ve found since I stopped 4 years ago that there seems to be more & more people who don’t drink or is it that I now notice them more ?? But I certainly notice the difference 2/3 drinks has on those that do and I know where I’d rather be
