Portal Hypertension and Esophageal Varices Grade 2

Hello All,

Hope all are doing good in this group. I am writing this on behalf of my mom. Recently she experienced some stomach pain and our gastroenterology doc. suggested for a CT Scan & Endoscopy and below are the results

CT Scan results :

1. Chronic parenchymal disease of the liver with features of portal hypertension

Endoscopy results :

Esophageal varices Grade 2

Our doc. suggested to take Cardivas 18.5 mg for next 2 months followed by USAB after 2 months.

I am bit worried that varices will happen because of problems in liver like cirrhosis etc. Please let me know if portal hypertension and Varices are treatable, and it can be cured in a point of time (1 - 2 years)

Note : She is diagnosed with Breast cancer from 2011 and she's currently under hormonal therapy (Femara - 2.5 mg) and have type 2 diabetes.

The beta blocker she's been prescribed should hopefully reduce the portal veinous pressure and hopefully relieve the oesophageal varices. In my hubbies case he had to have his varices banded (he had a massive bleed when 7 burst) - he went on to have an aggressive banding regime which eradicated his varices (42 varices banded).

Sadly portal hypertension is a side effect of the cirrhotic liver.

Cirrhosis sadly is a serious health condition, it is also known as end stage liver disease in that it is the final stage of the health deterioration of the liver. The liver is badly scarred and although you can live with the condition it is the side effects that create the worse symptoms.

When my husband was first diagnosed with it in April 2012 he had life threatening symptoms, however, 7 years down the line he is living with the condition. His liver isn't doing all of it's 500 jobs but enough so that he isn't suffering the major ill effects.

You might want to look at the British Liver Trust page on cirrhosis for full and accurate details about the condition. britishlivertrust.org.uk/li...

Best wishes to you both, Katie

Hi Katie,

Thanks for your words, it gives me more hope

Hi Prasath_sas

Welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately no one on the forum is medically qualified to advise on your mum's results. As your mum also has had other conditions like breast cancer and diabetes, it is very important that she receives clear guidance from her own medical consultant.

We do have supportive information on cirrhosis, portal hypertension and varices on our website, however, it appears that a discussion with the consultant clarifying your mums liver function is needed in the first instance.

Very best wishes
