How much time in average it takes to go yo stage 3 to stage 4 for a liver? If not taking meds.
Hi guys a stupid question somehow - British Liver Trust
Hi guys a stupid question somehow
Not a stupid question to ask but probably an impossible one to answer. It would depend on the underlying condition and what it is that is attacking the liver. It really is a very individual thing and even a medic couldn't give you an answer. Some people are stage 4 before they even know they have an issue.
There are things you can do to prevent progression and try to reverse damage but it depends entirely on the cause of the issue in the first place.
How long is a length of string? There is not a set amount of time. Also depends what the cause of your liver disease is as well as to if it will even progress
I have several bits of string which I have measured very carefully. But I keep the results secret to avoid misleading people about how long their particular piece of string might be.

Have I said something misleading?🤔
No, your'e comment wasn't misleading, but some interpret things differently.
Just a bit of levity- your reply was fine.
Good answer ☺️
I couldn’t wait. I went straight to stage four ☹️
I as well, I skipped right to it! I will never forget the day I was told stage 4 cirrohsis. And I do not drink. Quite the surprise.
The ‘do not pass go’ moment, there is no one else in the room?
I was told in a email!
That is very sensitive, are you decompensated?
I am reaching that place. Variceal bleeds from nose, they have been minor so far. Sleep seems non existant. Lot of pain.
Ask for a trans jugular biopsy, even email might work?
Trans jugular biopsy I do not know what that is? I had liver biopsy got results via email.
Not sure what you are trying to say.... I had stomach surgery they decided to biopsy liver while in there, they made error and results were sent via email. I looked up trans jugular, that is biopsy, already been done, so not sure what you are trying to say?
I understand, you have already had one done. Normally you get the diagnosis and then followed by the trans jugular biopsy. It is the definitive diagnosis, in my case confirming end stage decompensated cirrhosis.
It is a single surgical procedure with a local. Your story is unusual and I understand the email. Error being the operative word, in both senses.
I am in US, they do not do anything by the book here, they treat you badly for cirrohsis, like punish you.
It is the shit end here, thank you George Best.
I have had a nurse yell at me because she thought I had hep c, and donated blood at a blood drive. She assumed because of the cirrohsis! I told her to go back to med school because cirrohsis is no longer a hep c and alchohol disease.
I also feel like I have the flu all the time, It just feels that way.
my husband also, straight to stage 4 . unexplained swollen stomach , we which now know as the ascites . been in hospital twice for draining since diagnosed mid jan this year .
Very sorry to hear that. Ascites really scares me
he has lost all his muscle and is almost just skin and bone after being a very muscular man. but now has this swollen stomach even after drainage , the ascites has gone temporarily but the abdomen still stays enlarged. in is on 10 day of a hospital stay at the moment, which is made harder as we live in bulgaria and apart from the main doctor no one speaks english . so long days and nights for him . we have house up for sale so desperately hoping to sell quick and return to uk and family .
I will pray for him! Terrible situation.
I had ascites in the abdomen and had tablets which got rid of the fluid but my stomach stayed enlarged, it took a while but eventually just reduced. I also was skin and bone, no muscle. Very slowly I followed a plan from the nutritionist. High protein but in small amounts (a lot smaller than you think) less than 1/4 of a chicken breast for example in one meal with veg, salad etc.. whole grain foods only, plenty of protein shakes with fruit, trying to eat 6 times a day but again, tiny portions. It took a while as my stomach just felt full but I got there. It’s a difficult situation where you are so maybe you could try helping with this from your home for the moment if you can’t see a nutritionist. ADMINS if this is classed as advise that shouldn’t be given please remove and I apologise.
If its alcohol related it's the time it takes to down the one last drink that tips you into unrecoverable liver disease.
Hi Benidormermick
This is not a stupid question at all. As the forum members have said, progression of liver disease can vary widely and is dependent on so many factors.
We hope you are under the care of a specialist and can get time to address these important queries to them..
Keep us posted.
Warm wishes
