My GP told me when she diagnosed gallstones that it was very unlikely that any surgeon would consider removing my gallbladder because of its close proximity to the liver. I should add that by her own admission my doc knows little about cirrhosis, which is my claim to fame on here!
However, recently I've read a couple of posts from the Liver Trust in which they discuss gallbladder problems and surgery, with no mention of any associated risk to the liver (apart from the usual risk of trauma due to any kind of invasive surgery, I suppose). Should I return to my GP and ask her to refer me for further gallbladder investigation? I'm presently on tenterhooks the whole time in anticipation of another painful attack of cholecystitis. Many thanks for any advice you can give.

I would absolutely seek a second opinion in your position. As your Doc admits tbey are general practitioners and know a little about alot of things, you need to see someone more specialised. And, you have totally made my evening by getting the tenterhooks saying right. So many people say " tenderhooks " it drives me potty!!!!!😃😂😃😃
Thank you moonbeam. I'm so pleased to find someone else who can't stand "malapropisms" - canine pepper, tumeric being two more! I've just changed GP due to a house move and will ask him for further investigation.
A friend of mine needed to have his gallbladder out a number of years ago. When they opened him up his gallbladder was intertwined with his liver. They had to remove the gallbladder with a quarter of his liver. He's still here 20 years later. I had my gallbladder removed in 2009 long before my cirrhosis diagnosis. They did it keyhole and I had no problems whereas my inflamed gallbladder caused pancreatitis which was agony and is a serious condition.
Hello your post caught my attention . I am scheduled to have my gall bladder removed May 27th but I am having pain just below my rib shed on the left side , laying down makes the pain go away but lifting and bending make it much worse . When I talked to the surgeon about this he said that was not typical gall bladder pain and brushed it off . But I have been reading how inflamed gallbladders can cause pancreatitis which is why your post caught my eye . It feels like someone is squeezing my insides on the left at times but I push through the pain , come home and lay down for relief when I first discovered the gallstones he did test me for pancreatitis anc it came back negative but that was s month ago , just wondering what your symptoms of pancreatitis were .
Definitely! You might have read my husband's post, Peeps7, he has end stage liver disease, we were given due warning that he might not survive the op but we subsequently found out that his gall bladder had gone septic which of course we did not find out till post surgery. He had to have open surgery and has an 8" scar. He is making steady progress, still in pain currently, but his surgeon is delighted with him. It is only two and half weeks later and he is 81. Definitely PUSH! All the best, Anne x
