Fatty Liver

I have been told I have a liver which is “normal in size with smooth contours, no focal lesions but echogenic texture appears increased” - a further scan showed a “stiffness value of 4.4kPa, and a CAP of 259 dB/m” - how can I evaluate what that means? How can I tell if it is alcoholic fatty liver or non-alcoholic and how should it be treated? Can anyone help?

Good news with the 4.4kPa - whether it be alcohol or non-alcohol related it appears to still be at the fatty liver stage without having progressed to fibrosis or worse.

As regards alcohol/non-alcohol it is probably impossible to tell unless you know you perhaps have too high an alcohol intake (further blood tests might tell). Regardless of what has caused you to have fatty liver it is now important to ease right down on the booze to give your liver chance to recover as it won't help a fatty liver even if the cause is NAFLD.

As regards NAFLD have a read at the British Liver Trust page on that condition and it might give you further pointers on what you can do to protect your liver going forward and give it a chance to recover. britishlivertrust.org.uk/li...

Hi Haggis88,

I would say Katie pretty much said it all.

The other option is just call your doctor's office and get the information you need from them.
