Pale stool / Greasy Stool

I had my most recent liver tests done a month ago and they were normal. ACT/AST levels were right on the borderline point of being normal. Doctor said we can do a follow-up in a year.

I haven't drank in 3 months. Then all of a sudden I had 3 binge episodes. One was one day where I drank vodka/beer all day... The next was 10 days later and lasted two days where I drank a handle of vodka between the two days...

The next day I wake up and go to work and I crapped a very pale almost colorless crap. And the next day, I crapped again and it was very similar. Now, during this second binge episode, I ate very unhealthy... Buttered popcorn, ice cream, chips.... etc...

Is it possible that this is a one time occurence and quitting alcohol / eating healthy will bring it back to normal? Or is this one of those futuristic death sentences where I have cirrosis now and I'm dead in the near future?

PS: Other symptoms were just being thirstier than usual. I drank a ton of water the past 24 hours. That seems to be getting better. Other than that, I don't have any other symptoms.

Hi isomer and welcome 😀

You are doing, in my opinion, a good thing coming on here and sharing your worries. Whilst we are not meant to give specific advice (thats down to your doctors) there are people on here that have so much experience of issues they will be able to relate to you.

Lots of us, not surprisingly, have had Vimto issues (what's a handle?) and the overwhelming comment is if you think you have liver related issues is to give up (yes completely) all alcohol. Aka Vimto (by me hahaha). Think of the money you will save and no hangovers and spare money, maybe, for holidays you can take - and remember 😁.

You have said your follow up is in a year, in the meantime are you going to go back to the doctor and tell him/her EXACTLY what you told us. I mean if you are worried enough to tell us you owe it to yourself and the doctor to revel all! Don’t fib about what you drink ( i did and I think others) because how can you be helped unless you help yourself. God, I look back and think if I had only followed advice and stopped drinking about 10 years ago instead of not stopping until 4 years ago I might not have had to have my liver transplant 6 weeks ago....

Water - yes yes yes. I was told to drink 3 litres a day. It’s hard at first but you soon get used to it - 2x1.5 litres by my chair - all gone by 9PM 👍🏻.

So, to cut a long story short ( i can’t seem to do that these days now I’ve got so much time to think - and my brain is slowly becoming alert again!) think about;-

Doctors and being open

Vimto and the money you could save by NO Vimto

Whatever you do i think you”ll get lots of support here 😀😀😀

Today my stool was pretty much normal. Had color brown/green.... I ate carrots/broccoli/red kidney beans... Drank a ton of water... I'm thinking/hoping it was just a one off pale stool because I drank so much vodka PLUS I ate buttered popcorn/ice cream/fast food and it just sent my body into overload.

My plan is to stop drinking alcohol #1. #2 is to eat healthier and start cooking at home more. And #3 is to start doing more physical activity. I'm 5"11 and 163 lbs so I'm not overweight, but I haven't been as physically active.

Still a little bit sore but that's expected after an episode like this. Drank almost a full handle of vodka in two days. If I feel any additional symptoms by Wednesday after eating healthy/drinking lots of water over the next few days I will setup an appointment with my doctor. As of now, I feel confident it was just a one off. Hopefully...

I feel better mentally posting here. Peace of mind is key and reading through a lot of the articles here puts my issue in perspective. I hope you all remain healthy and thank you for the reply!

Well healthy diet and no drinking gives your liver the best chance of healing. Your liver has to replace damage hepatocytes with new ones to restore healthy histology. Binge drinking is pretty much the equivalent of taking one step forward and 10 steps backwards. I had drug induced hepatitis and my labs were normal after the initial ER trip of 4 times the upper limit of normal. My fibroscan showed I had liver inflammation and the number dropped to a 4 after inflammation was gone. I also went to school for medicine and I knew my doctor was an idiot, but I trusted her judgement anyway, and I ended up with drug induced hepatitis. AST and ALT aren't very accurate indicators of liver's health, as AST and ALT found in your blood are mostly from days prior. Albumin, A/G ratio, bilirubin and INR are better indicators of a liver problem. Also, alcohol damages many organs in the body, the pancreas being one which can also cause pale and greasy stool. Actually greasy stool is more of an indicator of acute or chronic pancreatitis.

Hi Isomer

I can't comment on the alcohol from myself (mine was medical cock up) but my dad was a drinker and I watched him sink.

He would be sober for a while then go on a bender and immediately regret it. There's a fear that without drinking you become boring to others or yourself. Takes time to realise that is b.s. unf9rtunately you do have to stop completely.

You are doing the right thing by improving your lifestyle and monitoring your stool. Also putting it on here will help you keep an eye on dates and what changes you made. When you speak to your doctor you can be precise about it.

Take care of yourself
