liver biopsy
I haven't had a liver biopsy thank goodness. A friend had it done and she said it was really agonising and she would never have it done again under any circumstances. I hope you feel better soon. Take care. Deb
I had a terrible experience. I struggled to breathe afterwards. Every breath was very painful. Nurses did not care. They told me that I had the paracetamol and I cannot have anything for 4 hrs. Nobody believed me and they treated me as a hysterical patient. As according to them there was nothing wrong with me. Then shift changed and a different nurse came. I finally got a proper pain relief. It made my blood pressure drop. But I was finally at peace after crying and struggling to breathe for 4 hrs. I will never ever consent to do this again. I felt some intermittent pain at the area of the biopsy for some time. But every Dr I spoke to gas downplayed it's significance. I discussed my experience with my consultant. He said according to medical notes, everything was fine. Except me being emotional!!!!
The blood supply that goes to the liver also supplies the shoulder area and so when the biopsy is taken, it is possible that referred pain can occur. This is what happened to me the first time I had one done, many years ago. I was left unattended for quite some time (after being wheeled back onto the ward) and my blood pressure dropped very low. However, until visiting hours started, I had no way of letting anyone know what was going on, since I could not reach the call button and I was in a side room!!
I had problems breathing like yourself and don't remember being given pain killers at all.
I have had one done since, a couple of years ago and it was completely different, despite the fact that the person doing the biopsy was a novice and took longer than I had expected. He was however guided by someone very experienced and I had no pain during or after. I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but it wouldn't necessarily be the case if you had another one. As you say, most people seem to get away without experiencing the pain. I don't know if it depends where the biopsy is taken from. Best of luck recovering
Hi I had a liver biopsy approx 5 years ago I also found it horrendous I had pains in my right shoulder n struggled to breathe I had to have oxygen for while after I would never have one again to be honest
Yep my biopsy was also horrendous, never again !
