What’s in a hernia op?

Do they just push it back in and put a wire mesh around your stomach? Or can they get rid of it? Mine is killing me lately but I am on a 2 year waiting list as it is not classed as urgent.

Cheers,

Brett

hi hun I've had 2, an umbilical and groin. the umbilical one didnt hurt too much until got trapped. I was rushed into hospital had surgery - they cut about 3-4 inch across your navel area push it back in then a special gauze holds the intestine in place then stitched up.

Thanks for that but my liver doctor said never to get that done in case I have another internal bleed? That’s what confuses me.

Cheers,

Brett

my doctor said i couldnt have mine done as I wasnt strong enough (I'd only just stopped drinking at the time and was very weak) Week after she said that I was rushed in, I was in absolute agony could sit lay down or any thing. when the hernis does that it becomes squeezed and nothing can get passed it. Would have thought better to have it down before it gets like that and all your bloods can be done to have it done while at your strongest.

If your hernia gets trapped you will have to have the op. My husband was rushed to hospital 3 days ago as the hernia was trapped and cutting off the blood supply. He had had it for quite some time but was able to push it back himself. This time he couldn't. They do put it back and cover a mesh over it to hold it un place. Hope all goes well for you.

You best ask the doctor just which type of hernia are we talking about. You got several choices like the Inguinal,Incisional,Ventral, Hiatal, Umbilical, Femoral. And even more choice on the Treatment Options , from Non-Surgical to Surgical even then there is “just watch it” or Laparoscopic or Open Repair. Once you got that figured out I would question, if This is even a situation where the use of surgical mesh for the hernia repair Is even needed. But definitely talk to the surgeon about your specific circumstances and their best options and alternatives for hernia repairs and the hernia recurrence rate of the treatment chosen. See if you can get that in writing either pin to paper from the drs office or something from the mesh supplier on what to expect just in case the need would arise to question just wtf they put inside you.

Good luck

It depends on how stable you are, platelet count, varicose, how fit & strong you are & ascities. My husband had his done last year for umbilical hernia. He was in hospital on the day ward it was cancelled the first time due to low platelets & clotting factors

Thanks for that.

I should be OK. I’m as strong as an Ox on death row lol. I should only be sent for more tests tomorrow so nothing to worry about yet.
