Hi, so I've been on here since November after i developed Jaundice. I did used to drink ie share a bottle of wine Hubby during meal times 4-5 days a week over last couple of years. Sometimes i didn't drink for months in between, I stopped altogether August due to anxiety- no regrets though. Jaundice is believed to be triggered by Gallstones or antibiotic reaction. I have a history of GERD so Bile reflux not unlikely. I have had progressive episodes over last 6 months. I am also awaiting Bowel MRI.
My other enzymes have always been normal and until November it was thought i has Gilbert's. I have mild Palmar Erythema but may be atrributed to high Estrogen from Endometriosis.
Anyway i have my Liver Scan tomorrow, i have to fast for 6 hours but can drink as much water as i like. Does this sound normal? Are there any questions i should ask the Radiographer. It's a Consultant doing the scan.
Hi Ooooops, is this an ultrasound you are having? It's the same as you might have had during your pregnancy with a gel applied to your tummy and the probe passed over it to get a look at your liver and other abdominal organs. Fasting before a scan is essential so that they get a clear view of your organs, eating or drinking before would lead to food being within and bowel gases can block the signal and prevent a good look at organs.
It is more than likely you will not be told anything tomorrow - the radiographer often will not volunteer any information and often won't answer questions. The radiographer will most probably send a report to your referring doctor after they have studied the scan more thoroughly.
Hi, I've usually been very lucky where they've talked through scans. I wasn't sure if it was standard untrasound because of the fasting. That makes sense though. I'm hoping that because ot is a Consultant scanning that they will give me some idea. How lomg are results otherwise? I'm awaiting urgent surgery for a major op so I'm on tender hooks. My Dr couldn't feel abnormality and i had Gastroscopy last month, all clear and perfect.
Yes, fasting is absolutely normal with liver / abdominal ultrasound. Can't comment on how long each hosptials reporting procedure is - normally about a week at hubbies hospital.
That’s interesting, my husband has had a couple of ultrasound scans on liver and a ct scan and we do not recall fasting prior to scan? Your comments make complete sense Katie. JX
I had to fast for 6 hours before my liver ultrasound too. I asked the sonographer what everything looked like and she told me my liver was fatty. Maybe she shouldnt have but she did. X
For any morning scan hubby always has to fast from midnight, for afternoon scans he's allowed a light breakfast before 8am then nothing until the scan is done.
