I have just had the news that my brother has been added to the list for a second liver transplant. His first was due to Budd Chiari, and nearly 2years later he has become very unwell. The doctors haven't pinpointed what is wrong but they believe the donor may have been genetically prone to liver problemss.
He has been listed as a priority case locally due to how quickly the liver has started to fail since symptoms started about 8 weeks ago. It is hard to see him lying in intensive care feeling so sick and unwell. He is currently on dialysis and also treatment for low blood pressure as a result of the liver failure.
We must all now be patient while we wait for a liver to become available. I do feel guilty that essentially someone else will lose their life and another family suffering heartbreak.

The ITU units in liver transplant hospitals are highly experienced in organ transplant so will keep your brother as comfortable as possible as well as a very close eye on all his levels. I hope that he gets his transplant soon. It is a terrible thought that someone has to die in order for an organ to be available, but the donor has chosen this - I'm on the donor reg and would want someone to benefit from my organs etc... We still write to my husband's donor families and remind them of the sheer gratitude in our hearts and how everyday is a blessing which their loved one has given to us.
We got the call on Wednesday night that it was expected to go ahead on Thursday.
The surgery went well, as they were concerned about his low blood pressure and the fact it was a re-transplant. His previous transplant took about 11 hours to complete, but this was done in 6 1/2 hours.
He seems to be recovering well and everything is looking positive at the moment. He already feels much better in spite of the operation.
We now have to hope that everything goes right for him moving forward.
I registered as a donor too when he had the first transplant. I don't know why it hadn't even occurred to me before. It is the best gift you could possibly give to somebody.
Were you given the details of the donors families? I think I would too like to contact them in time and know the difference it had made to our lives.
