Hiya folks.... Hope your all ok.

My elder sister runs a pub in my old town and Ive found out today that one of her friends was admitted to hospital last wednesday and passed away today from 'liver failure.'

She was a big drinker but showed no symptoms of cirrhosis in any way, shape or form.

I think my sister could see the look of panic on my face when she told me.

Does this happen often? Obviously being diagnosed with cirrhosis myself its brought back a whole new level of anxiety!!

I was actually feeling ok!!

Liver cirrhosis can go undetected as liver function tests can be normal even when cirrhosis is quite bad. The reason being that your body is compensating for it.

Therefore unless you have other symptoms that send signals to medics to do further tests it can go undetected.

Hi matt, sorry to hear the sad news. Unfortunately like myself back in 2008, i had no symptoms of cirrhosis untill i had ascites. I was actually very poorly even though i never knew it .was in hospital 6 weeks where i was told if i had not had any acites i would have been dead in 6 months. I have stagef4 fibrosis so i know my liver is badly scarred .i now have other health ussues with mobility. Went to QE last tuesday to be told my liver is now fatty which contributes to making cirrhosis worse yet my liver function is perfect !! Unfortunately things can change in a heartbeat. Try not to worry .. long as you take good care of yourself and no alcohol all should be ok x

My hubby had same thing happen. He has acsities and they thought it was from his cancer. Whole time it was his liver. Every two weeks he gets 10 liters drained. Didn't find that out till he had hernia surgery and found cirrhosis. We take it one day at a time

Hey Matt the same thing happened to a friend of mine-however he had cirrhosis and continued to drink and had jaundice. You’ve now stopped drinking and further damage should be ceased. Good luck and take care ....best k

Thanks guys. Just sent me through a bit of a panic. Ive never heard of anyone just popping off like that due to liver failure.

Keep on trucking!

Sadly Matt this is common. I posted up a website earlier this year about alcohol awareness. Under the heading of, "Stages of Liver Damage", I've included a video about various people who lead what they regard to lead normal life styles and end up with cirrhosis. It's called, "The Scarred Liver". Mary's story may be of particular interest to you: taep.eu/index-f.htm

I hope this is of some help to you. The video is best viewed in full screen mode. I hope you find not only this, but the website helpful.

Good luck

Hi, sorry to hear your sad news. Ive had liver failure 3 times since 2010 and I had little or no warning but survived aĺ three. I have cirhossis, verifies and portal hypertension. I do not drink. It seems to creep up on you by surprise. I went off my food and tummy swelledvwhich was normal for me. Best wishes

Had no idea it could catch you out like this. I thought it was progressive so you would have plenty of 'notice' (if thats the right word)

Best wishes Julie
