Been diagnosed with nafld. Fibroscore 6.9 which I understand is borderlien. Consultant said should aim to get below 6 and didn't and excercise should do this. ultrasound showed no inflammation and told liver looked normal and healthy. Consultant said they had tested for everything in blood tests and ruled out loads so it is fatty liver.

But. Since Jan I have lost about 2.5 stone (now 16 stone 5 9 bloke) but bloods were march ast 50 alt 133

sept ast 50 alt 108

10 October ast 67 alt 198!!!!

I had a cold the week before tests but was pretty much over it and finished 9 weeks of antibiotics thrimethropin 3 weeks before test ..coikd these affect it...worried and massive improvement in diet excercise and steady weight loss but seem to be going wrong way.

ALT can rise when you have an infection and as you say you'd had a cold and been on antibiotics so that could affect your ALT levels and at the moment I wouldn't be too worried about those unless they continue to rise once you are well over your bug.

As regards NAFLD have a read at the British Liver Trust page on it just to give yourself every chance to improve your liver situation. britishlivertrust.org.uk/li...

Fingers crossed all goes in the right direction from hereonin.

Antioboitcs can be VERY hard on your liver, some people even go into liver failure from taking them. Not that you should let an untreated infection go, just as bad. What I'm getting at is, I would bet that is what contributed to a 200 ALT. Plus your liver releases immunoglobulins when you're sick, added stress to liver increasing AST and ALT. 6.9 is borderline, you def want to see that number go down, which it will if you can get rid of the fat. Did the ultrasound say anything about hepatic steatosis (liver fat)? Normally, when you have enough to affect the fibroscan, you should see it with an ultrasound as bright enhanced homogeneous tissue. I'm guessing your fibroscan didn't have a CAP score? That would have been good because the machine can let you know for sure if it's fatty liver as CAP measures hepatic steatosis. Really all you can do anyway is lose weight, eat healthy and exercise. Limit toxic substances like Tylenol, alcohol, ect. Ultrasound isn't really that good for picking up inflammation, unless it shows an enlarged liver. As inflammation an increase a fibroscan 2KPA+. The rest of the bloods being good is very good, as my biggest worry with liver issues is Autoimmune. It seems to stay very silent until it has hit the liver very hard.

Hi thanks for the reply.

The ultrasound said my liver looked perfectly healthy and a normal size.

My cholesterol was 7.7 and triglycerides 5 in June and were 6 and 3 in April

Guess my concern is that I have now lost 2 and a half stone since January..swim or cross train pretty much daily..cut all sweeteners massively reduced sugar and processed foods and my test results dropped a bit in June to alt 108 ast 45 but have now shot up.

And fibroscan said nothing about liver fat...hospital consultant discharged me..i rang and queried discharge when alt and ast gone up and now he says do more blood tests in 5 weeks and come see me again. Plus to a this is that I was 18 stone 10 at 5 foot 9 and now 15 stone 13 and feeling much healthier...target is 14 stone.

I'm in the same boat where ALT and AST have been spiking. My issue was caused by a bad doctor who couldn't read labs, really good at the pen and paper dance. Here take all these meds, your good! Which can set off autoimmune activity, that is what I'd worry about if I was you. Also, ALT can be increased due to gallbladder issues, but gallbladder problems normally have pretty easy to spot symptoms, such as pain in the sternum area, bloating ect. I'd keep up with the blood work, if it comes back bad get a fibroscan with a CAP reading. Doctors have told me, "don't worry, I get liver elevation too". If you have then constantly, then it needs to be figured out. I worked as a medical administrator and had a few people with this, some ended up with AIH. The doctors were blowing them off and I had to push their care forward. Between this and MDjunction, too many stories about letting high liver enzymes go and it hitting the no going back point. Not saying this will happen to you, it probably wont, especially if you remain vigilant about the issue. Just saying you don't want to end up one of those people. When a doctor can't figure something out, they like to play the, "well that's probably just normal for you" card.

Hi

I was diagnosed with Nash with some fibrosis last November, had fibroscan about 3 weeks ago 6.5, showed very fatty liver with some fibrosis, nurse said this didn't warrant the amount of pain I'm in, she and my consultant now think it could be leisions/sphincter of Oddi from gall bladder removal 32 years ago!! I mentioned this to my consultant over 2 years ago and was fobbed off!! Please take care. Lots of love xxxx
