Try not to panic, the good news is - if they are describing it as an adenoma the chances are it is totally benign. There are numerous lumps and bumps that can arise in the liver which are not cancer related and in many cases require no treatment. Such things as adenomas, haemangioma's, cysts and all sorts. You can read more about these benign lumps on the BLT site at:- britishlivertrust.org.uk/li...

What follow up have they said they are going to do in order to give a more confirmatory diagnosis? Having something say 'possibly' or 'suggestive of' is scary I know from experience when in one of hubbies ultrasound scans we suddenly learned of several cysts in one lobe of his liver and a large lesion 'suggestive of' a haemangioma in the other. After clarifying that these had been seen previously on a CT scan and weren't new we were told they were nothing to be concerned about and would require no additional treatments.

Fingers crossed medics can clarify that this is a benign adenoma very soon and reduce your concerns.

All the best, Katie

Dear Leese

You will only be causing yourself a great deal of stress by googling things when at this stage you do not really know for sure what is actually wrong. Katie has given you excellent advice but you may think it is easy for us to say "Try not to panic". It would probably be of more help for you to have someone to talk to. Do you have some good friends you could talk with?

If you ring the British Liver Trust they have someone who you can talk to which I think would be of the greatest help to you right now. So get googling and look for their contact number FIRST. Then if you still need someone to talk to you could google some other help organisations. The sooner you can get the further tests carried out the better. I would strongly advise you to give up ALL alcohol. It is always good to do things which will put you in the best of health. So giving up alcohol is the most important. Also if you smoke try to cut down and make an appointment with your GP to see if they can provide you with support to help you give up smoking.

Concentrate on reading about how to live a healthy life and most important what steps you can take to look after your liver. The British Liver Trust also has some excellent advice on this too. Try to exercise and drink plenty of water. I know you will be feeling stressed right now so do things to distract you away from dwelling on what you have wrong and instead google the British Liver Trust and read up on how to look after yourself. Remember in life that "STRESS" is the biggest killer! Watch some funny films, mix with people who make you feel happy, and do things that are healthy which also make you feel good. Take care.

Dear Leese

I haven't been on here for a while and only just saw your message. So it's already the end of May so you will not have too long to wait. If you really cannot resist googling then please google "How to keep your Liver Healthy" or something like that. DO NOT GET into buying liver products - there are many sites selling those.

Remember the less toxins you take in the less work for your liver and the more time for your liver to repair itself. Make sure you get enough sleep, a good healthy diet based around "Liver Care" and avoid as much stress as possible. Sugar is a lethal product but so are artificial sweeteners. The very rare time I have any sugar is when I have porridge and I have half a teaspoon of sugar sprinkled on it. Also if I want hot milk I use a quarter of teaspoon of sugar for a mug of hot milk. Oh one other time - when I have Shredded Wheat I use half a teaspoon of sugar. I have no other sugar at all as I do not eat any processed foods and I only very rarely eat the foods I have mentioned. However, if I was able to prepare those foods I would not avoid them just because I need the small amount of sugar. As long as I had a maximum of one of those foods on any one day. Sugar is lethal for the liver and people with liver problems can quickly develop diabetes. So by cutting out sugar from your diet you will be helping to avoid further problems. Also if you have any type of painful condition sugar is like throwing petrol on a fire and the pain will be increased massively.

Of course, you should avoid ALL alcohol but don't ignore the other important rules.

No alcohol

Avoid sugar

Avoid medications as much as possible

Give up smoking if you can & get help if you need help giving up

Keep your weight under control & if you need help reducing weight ask and keep asking until you get help

Exercise gently at first and gradually increase (non weight-bearing exercise is best if you have any damaged joints)

Drink plenty of water (I prefer to avoid bottled water but please make your own decision as water in England often contains high levels of chlorine) Maybe something to ask the British Liver Trust

Avoid stress - remember not all stress is bad stress but avoid that type of stress that eats and nags away at you (some types of stress are good as some types motivate you into getting on and doing things you may have put off for a while)

Avoid fried foods

Avoid fatty foods

All these things will help you get into the best state of health possible. This will help prevent problems in the future and help you to be in the best of shape to deal with the current problem. I am afraid I cannot tell you anything about what you may have wrong - Katie has given you the best advice regarding that.

It can seem like so long to wait but keep yourself busy organising your new schedule as above and time will move so much more quickly. Also, do NOT try and do all the above in ONE swoop. One step at a time. One or two things a week for the easy things and pace the other stuff around it depending on how difficult it is for you. Please let us know how you get on.

Stay strong.
