Fatty liver: Iv had the results now of... - British Liver Trust
Fatty liver
Evening
Exercise, diet change and no alcohol are the best places to start, although I would expect your doctors to guide you on these things. Sometimes when you get a scary test result it blows your mind a bit, but a fatty liver may not be too much of a problem along as the cause can be stopped.
GGT is an enzyme that is found in bile duct cells, when they become irritated and damaged they leak into the blood and that is where the blood test is finding them. Luckily the Liver is very good at healing, it can turn this around, sort your life style then a full recovery is possible. Obviously talk with your doctors about this, take someone with you for support.
Thank you Ralph. Your right I will take someone with me next time I just Hurd liver disease and that was it. Everything after that just went over my head.
Hi Christine firstly yes fatty liver can be reversed ,and it's good that you have caught it now. Because if left untreated it can progress into cirrhosis. Your best bet is to get your doctor to refer you to a dietician in the hepatology department as there is no one fixed diet for it as everyones medical condition is different. Once you get on a proper diet to reverse it don't forget to exercise, as that's really important as well. Good luck
Its not just being overweight that can cause fat deposits in the liver. Ask yourself: 1) do i take a reasonable amount of exercise 2) do i smoke 3) have the doctors checked me for diabetes or insulin resistance 4) have i been on any long term medication 5) have the doctors checked me for viral hepatitis 6) have the doctors checked me for high blood pressure 7) have the doctors checked me for high cholesterol.
If you dont exercise, or do smoke or have anything like high BP or cholesterol etc, these are also causes of fatty liver. All lifestyle conditions, including high cholesterol, high BP and diabetes can be reversed with the correct diet and a decent amount of exercise.
With me it was insulin resistance/diabetes that was causing my fatty liver. At first they just told me to stop all alcohol. After doing a bunch of reading, I started eating even healthier, and exercising more along with no alcohol. Lost 15 lbs and the fatty liver went away, I believe the weight loss got rid of it.
And then it came back. The 2nd time it wouldn't go away with what I did the last time (and I had no more weight to lose). Over a year later it was still there, so I finally took on a drastic diet and went low carb, high fat, no starches at all (no: sugar, bread, grains, pulses, potato, pasta, rice) etc. Made sure to eat lots of healthy fats such as extra virgin olive oil, butter, coconut oil and omega 3 fats to replace the carbohydrate calories i was no longer eating. I also made sure that I took a probiotic as it's been said that fatty liver could be caused by bad bacteria in the gut. Fatty liver went away in 4 months. I also exercise everyday which helps but as I said, I didn't have any more weight to lose as I'm sitting at 115 lbs now.
