High gamma GT for 2+ years in 21 year old female???

Hi, I am 21 and have had high gamma GT for over 2 years now. I had blood tests Monday (7/3/16) and had an appointment for my results today (10/3/16) and am now being referred back to the gastroenterologist that had been seeing me. My gamma GT level is 113. I don't drink a lot, and if I do it's rare. And I have also noticed some weight gain/bloating in me torso. I have also noticed that when I have pain in my right side my levels are high (even tho my specialist said it isn't linked).

Has anyone had anything similar, this is related to a previous post and I will post it below. Any help would be great!! Thank you!

Previous post: Sorry for the long post, this has been going on for a while now. Whenever I come here to find similar issues I can never exactly find one so i'll explain mine.

In October 2013 my liver function (enzyme levels) tests started to come back as slightly high but nothing major (they put it down to rising due to the fact I was pregnant) but they are STILL high. I have had SO many blood tests. In April 2014 they were very high sitting at about 300. They have gone up and down since then. Throughout 2014 they went from 300 down to 150 down to 70 and back up again. February 2015 I had an MRI which showed nothing, I have had chest X-rays and ultrasounds on my other organs which again, have come back normal. I then had a back mri as I get pain in my right side (liver area) and again, it came back normal. However my liver function tests are still coming back high. they were considering a liver biopsy a few months back, my levels had dropped to 61, then in a month gone up to 115. they said, for me, they aren't high enough for one yet so are monitoring it with routine blood tests. I had my most recent tests done Tuesday as I have experienced some unexplained weight loss and tiredness, I phoned thursday and they were all back. All normal, except once again my liver function test. But for different reasons. Apparently the blood had 'clotted' so they were unable to test it? She claimed it was normal but it had NEVER happened in my life, nor my mum and grandads (who have had thousands of blood tests done). Im sure im just making myself paranoid but it's bugging me that these tests have been abnormal for 2+ years and is causing me pain and they still don't know why. Im 21, dont drink much as im a single parent and I don't and have never done any kind of drugs. Has this happened to anyone/anyone you know? Thank you

Hi,

it is a bit worrying when your GGT come back raised along with liver function tests that are also elevated. If you have blood clotting problems, I would ask to have a Fibroscan and ultrasound scan to check on liver size and other irregularity and surface scarring. Safer than a biopsy for you. Although a good liver specialist performing a biopsy should take a sample of your blood on the day of procedure to check your blood clotting time.

Also, if you haven't had it done already get tested for HCV just to rule it out.

And look at your lifestyle habits as a way to help your liver thus your health now and in future.

Stop drinking for a while, try to cut out all fizzy drinks esp Coke as the ingredients (phos) leech calcium from your bones and the sugar is bad for your liver and waistline. Avoid processed and greasy foods as the liver and gall bladder have to work hard to breakdown the fats in your diet as well as all the toxins you are exposed to, like alcohol. Also, any over the counter medications(or not) you use need to be looked at regarding their toxic affect on the liver.

If your liver function tests and GGT as well as your full blood count is still not within normal range, get a bone density test and make sure by then you have had a Fibroscan to see if your liver has scarring...

There are plenty of sites on line to help you understand lab test results.

Good luck,,

Interestingly I seen a kinologist this week and they said that having bacteria in your liver can cause you to get pain. I have the same issue as you with right sided pain and have been told I have mild scarring but it's not enough to give out the pain I am describing. I am now starting a herbal remedy course for 4 weeks to kill the Bacteria and see what happens.
