I had a blood test and shows abnormal liver function so been sent for a scan should I be worried
Abnormal liver function : I had a blood... - British Liver Trust
Abnormal liver function
No don't worry yet, wait and see. I have had abnormal liver function results for 7 years and despite many different scans and a liver biopsy no reason has been found. Obviously you need to be investigated but don't assume the worst just yet.
Hope it goes ok and proves to be nothing.
what was the blood test for? any symptoms-I had a scan following a British liver trust roadshow fibroscan which confirmed fatty liver..I had digestive issues though.
Dont worry just yet-a scan is the first thing that gets done following blood test.
Post again when you get the results and any blood tests which helps
Not worried but determined and pleased that by having a scan so early on ( no other symptoms of a distressed liver) there will be time if anything wrong is found ( there may be nothing wrong at all even ) but in time to be treated and fixed.
Just love a drink as don't smoke or do drugs,it's my only sin as to say
re alcohol -yes my only sin as well but you may have to become a bit more angelic....check out my posts on raised ggt. I'm seeing a lot of posts from people in mid 40s and mid 50s starting to see "liver" issues. I've had some success with diet etc. However-let's not make any assumptions.
Meanwhile go easy on the vino or whatever....
How much were you drinking? what are the bloods test numbers? Its pretty standard to get an ultrasound when you have raised enzymes
A bottle of wine most nights but when was with ex drank over 100 units a week so cut down
100 units a week long term can certainly cause serious Liver problems, but usually you would have to drink that for around a decade. If you post your numbers then we will be able to tell you how angry your Liver is. Try and remember that raised enzymes don't mean you have a scarred Liver, they measure inflammation.
Also a lot of drinkers get ill and find out they have some other Liver issue present such as Hep-c,b etc, auto immune causes.
A bottle of wine a night has not only x5 more units a woman is OK to drink each day but also around 500 calories which is pretty much the number of calories you would expect to eat in one meal. So along with your purse £££ you are damaging your liver and putting on weight (unless you don't eat a meal, just drink the wine). I suggest you try to love your liver rather than love the wine. You only have one liver and when it's fails, that's it. If you are drinking at home, have a go at looking at why you drink at home... Is it to relieve stress or becaus you think it helps you sleep. Or are you out socialising every night drinking that amount, in which case think about alternatives to alcoholic drinks.
Bolly makes a good point-you can get away with those units for a while like I did-best part of 35 years but a woman's liver is smaller than a mans-the 14 unit guideline (per week) is there for a reason. Try for a starter at least 2 nights off per week. you've almost cetainly got fatty liver at those levels-not the end of the world but a message to you to make changes. If you don't have symptoms yet-that's a good sign.
best
try and get the GGT levels if you can-I'm on High cholseterol myself(6.8) has been for years but blood pressure normal. There's a link between high GGT high cholestrol and risk of heart attack/stroke-with high blood pressure that may be a concern-so statins may be a way forward. Anyway-don't worry too much
keep us posted
