Its for both. Were you prescribed it by a liver specialist? If you have episodes of HE you may benefit from taking it daily. What does it say on the prescription re: dosage?

Hi Ricky, I agree with Bolly it's for both, they do recommend that someone with cirrhosis does 3 - 4 partially formed stools a day in order to rid the body of toxins. Lactulose is one medicine which can be experimented with in order to get the right effects - some people find it a bit violent and you need to find what is the right balance for you and right time of day to take it. My hubby has been on 40ml daily since diagnosis - he takes 20ml in a morning and 20ml at night. If going out for the day he may delay the morning dose to try and prevent an 'urgent need' whilst out and about.

Have a discussion with your consultant to see what they suggest but if you are having hazy memory/mild encephalopathy symptoms you should perhaps be on a regular daily dose from now on. Hubby only has mild HE symptoms but he has also been prescribed Rifaximin to help with this since June of last year.

All the best to you.

Katie :)

thank you just hate the taste of it

I don't suppose anyone likes it, I understand it is really sickly sweet but it is medicine and if you need to take it then you have to I guess. Hubby always washes it down with some water straightaway to try and rid his mouth of the taste.

All the best to you, Katie :)

It's like Ayshirek says it's so u don't get confused cos it makes u get rid of the toxins in your body with the liver not working properly.

its works my hubby takes it otherwise he would be in bed sleeping an they is the chance of going into a coma if u don't

Hi rickyrocket I've been on Lactulose since leaving hospital in October 2013.i have both problems like you. I was on rifaxamin and Lactulose for my HE .If you are feeling hazy/confused you should be taking a specific dose morning and evening. If you are not doing so then you should speak to your doc or liver specialist. You are talking about a serious problem. Hope you're doing OK.
