This is the first time ive ever been called back for a GGT test!! Should i be worried??
Hi, im a newbee and would like your op... - British Liver Trust
Hi, im a newbee and would like your opinion please, for over 10 years i have had yearly blood sugar, liver and cholesterol tests done and
gamma GT is not a full indicator, a full liver function test gives the bigger picture I would thought u would have this hand in hand the main indicators are Bilirubin and ALT readings. To be worried no not at all get the facts on table and go from there. Remember bloods dump up and down and very influenced on a few days activity on drinking and eating you probably have full bloods and U&E bloods. Again don't worry.
Ask here for advice
Thanks for your reply Bigplanet67, i think the receptionist also mentioned LFT also or LST?? Have also had some pains on right upper side and putting 2 and 2 together .......
Well that's a indicator but have you binged a bit over Xmas. Again get bloods done take it from there. Not heard of LST but so many blood test. Take care
hi, welcome to the forum-you might want to search on this site for GGT-myself and others have posted on this previously and there are some useful links. As bigplanet says-GGT very sensitive to alcohol and drug use(medications). It's also an indicator of prolonged alcohol use but if you're a normal drinker then a "heavy" xmas could certainly slew results. GGT is an indicator of liver damage which can be reversable. A lot of GPs use it as an indicator of fatty liver also. GGT levels from 100 -250 could indicate this. Any other symptoms-digestive issues? To give you an example-my liver tests were always normal except for ggt plus I had symptoms-right side pain pale coloured stools etc. These all cleared with 3-4 months off drink plus the cholesterol came down-you might consider the same if you've been overdoing it. cheers
Hi mamac. What condition are you yearly monitored for with blood sugar, liver and cholesterol tests?
Just slightly high blood pressure thats under med control but also family history of type 2 diabetes and high colestorol both of which mine are fine! I take 75 mg irbesartan and 2.5 mg bisoprolol, do you think that has any bearing on my call back for extra liver tests?
If its just the GGT they want to run again then no it may not be anything to do with the liver, just that they want to double check an elevated result. If they were wanting to run the full Liver Function test panel then yes they will be focussing on your liver health. I would ask the GP what their concerns are when you go back for the test.
Hi mamac sorry only just read your question.ive had slightly raised ggt levels for about 9 years.just used to have a 'mot'yearly.nurses always told me I was fine.a new dr decided that as a non drinker all my life it wasn't fine.if you click on my post/replies youl see I had the year from hell to be finally diagnosed with pbc.hopefully yours is nothing but don't let anyone fob you off.good luck
