The eternal dilemma….to round or not to round?!

I’ve had a cold most of the week and been feeling a bit sorry for myself. Nothing bad enough to stop me doing anything but just enough to make you feel a bit miserable when you do! I haven’t run since Saturday. Finally, this afternoon I felt ok enough to give it a go. I opened up NRC to see if any of the guided runs took my fancy and discovered that apparently I’d been running since Weds night and had covered the best part of 7km. Go me! I must be so fit I can even run in my sleep, although I’m not sure my pace was very impressive, After deleting the rogue run, I scrolled through the recovery runs on offer this week and none of them grabbed me. Instead, I thought I’d just stick a podcast on and go. How far? Somewhere between two and five milesish.

I’m not going to lie, this was a grumbly one. It just seemed to be full of niggles and struggles. Nothing to worry about. Just those random aches and pains and annoyances that are there for a few minutes and pass. I couldn’t get my laces right. They were too loose. Then one was too tight. Then too loose again. Finally after a couple of miles I forgot about my feet. That was until my right big toe was a bit sore. That lasted until my left shin felt weird. Which carried on until my right hip flexors started to complain. And then my left glute took over. My right quad got in on the action for a couple of minutes. It was so strange, almost as if random parts of my body just wanted to have a little moan to remind me they still existed and then stop again. Luckily by three miles, everything seemed to have settled down and I felt ok.

The next issue I hit was unexpected traffic. The usually lovely and quiet county lane I’d reached was full of cars following their sat nav’s down a totally unsuitable diversion to avoid roadworks on the main road. That mean loads of stopping and starting, and jumping into hedges as drivers who don’t know how to drive safely in the lanes kept coming round blind corners way too fast. Not exactly relaxing! By the tine I hit the village, with bluebells still blooming, I was pretty tired from the mental energy of not getting run over. I was on about 4.5 miles and decided I’d round up to 5. As I was flogging myself on laps round the high street, I just thought to myself “why are you doing this? Does it really matter if your watch says 4.78 miles?”. I dropped to a walk and ended the run. That felt really hard and was a proper challenge to whether I was in control of my run or my run was controlling me. So I’m embracing the randomness of my distance.

If I’d had Coach B with me, I’m sure he’d have told me to measure success in as many ways as possible. I’m really pleased that this sort of run is back to being just a pretty normal run rather than feeling like a long run. Stopping when I felt like it was a win. It was a decent run which was quicker than it felt. Always a bonus. I managed not to get flattened by traffic. Maybe that’s the most unexpected success of all!

Happy running Team Bridge!

That was a reasonable 4.78 miles run for you today MissUnderstanding apart from that quite country lane being turned into a mini M1 due to the roadworks on the main road, I hope you aren't too tired after dodging all that traffic while running

Thanks Al! Next time I’ll go a different way when I spot it’s busy. Usually the only hazards round here are nosy sheep and cows on the other side of fences!! I’m planning a nice chilled evening.

What a run...and very well done to you!

Niggles, twinges, mumbles and grumbles... I feel many of us can empathize with you ... you ran really well and did well to keep going especially with the hazards of the traffic... eeek!

It sounds, despite all to have been a very good run and you are coming back to full strength after your cold...

On you go... :) x

Thank you! I came home to find the village Facebook page had exploded with chat about the traffic. I should have just changed my route when I realised it was so busy. We live and learn! Felt good to finish that one!

Thank you! I love all the bluebells around here. It’s such a lovely time of year. Hopefully the roadwork will be short lived and normal service will resume for the next run!

Well done on your long run. I just checked - 4.78 miles is 7.69 km which sounds a lot further!!

Love the bluebells and sympathise with the wandering niggle :)

There's no way I'd run on the roads round here, people drive like maniacs. You have so many reasons to celebrate this run. Especially for giving yourself permission to stop when you'd had enough.

Thank you! There rea a lot of roads I’d never venture on to. The lanes are usually really nice. Stupid roadworks!! It looks much nicer today. I’ll be going along a very functional run along the side of a dual carriageway while my husband gets his hair cut!! At least the sun is shining and I’m weirdly looking forage to it!

Definitely a big win there MU. That traffic does sound infuriating and I know what you mean about diversions down unsuitable lanes, and people not having a clue how to drive on them. It happens a lot around here too. 🙄

You overcame everything and and told those grumbles to get back in their box. A great distance too. 💪

Thank you! It was a really nice run after it finished and an average to grumbly one while it was going on!!! Have a great time at AC today. It’s beautiful weather for it. 🦌 ☀️ 🏃

Super post MissUnderstanding and one lots of us must think of. I've had a virus the last few weeks (working in a school it's bound to happen!) and am still struggling to shake it off. For me, I'll just stop it whenever really. I only like to chase a mile or miles at the end of the year. Some of my months mileage might be 25.9 or 28.7 and I could round up but don't do it until the end of the year. Hope as the days pass and runs come that you feel better and brighter. They'll come and you'll get there...because you're doing what you're doing 😊👏👏👏

Thank you and get well soon. Those sorts of viruses that linger are miserable. Having done my time in education, I know what wonderful little germ factories children can be!!! Hopw it’s not too long for your virus to disappear. The sunshine helps the mood!

I think I’m going to be embracing the stopping whenever. It’ll stop my neighbours giggling at me when I’m jogging back and forth past my door trying to get the last little bit of the run done!!

oh the dilemma! I also feel the urge to round up- I like to have two zeros at the end but today it was 6.21 km 😂
