NRC 10k plan : “9k Run”

I wasn’t planning another exciting run today. The builders are still at home which means I’m still not wanting to be there. They’re very keen and have arrived before 8.30am every day. That’s helped with getting up and out. Friday is Pilates day and I usually try to run before. It was an opportunity for the third flat run of the week, and my calf and glute were a bit stiff so I thought a gentle pootle would do them good.

I arrived at the start and couldn’t decide what to do. The “it’s ok 5k” was an option but on a whim, I opted for the “9k run”, but not really planning to do all of it. The weather was grey and miserable and the scenery was nothing like yesterday-just a housing estate and an old runway (pictured). I wasn’t even feeling particularly enthusiastic so I’ve no idea why I chose the longest run I’ve done for ages. Still. It was a good decision!

On a whim, before starting I nipped to the leisure centre shop for some run fuel. The best option seemed to be peanut butter balls on the basis that they were the only thing that fitted in my leggings’ pocket! They were nice though and suitably portioned for eating at intervals. I wish I’d had my hydration vest today-it was hot and I was quite thirsty. That doesn’t usually happen on runs of this length.

The guided run is great in places and extremely annoying in others. Daniel the engineer tries out modifying Coach B’s voice. That nearly tipped me over the edge, and not in a good way. There are some good questions about what holds you back in your running, follows by time to think through how you can combat that. Ego is my biggest issue-I often don’t want to run comfortably slowly because don’t like the numbers. I also don’t like taking breaks. This came at a very opportune time. I’d hit a bit of a wall about 5km in and really wanted to end the run. Instead, I just rested for a minute or so on a conveniently located stone bench. That was just enough to get me to the end.

The last km was a bit of a slog but Usher got me through via the “1Xtra Throwback Thursday” mix on BBC sounds. Not my usual choice but hit the spot today! I was very pleased to finish the full distance right back at the start. My route planning has got much better recently!

9km is a weird, in betweeny distance to me, so I doubt I’ll run it again but it’s given me a great confidence boost that 10k is happily within reach.

Anyone done this one yet?

***SPOILER ALERT***

If you have done this run, what did you think of the surprise pace changes at 6km?!!

Aaaaaagh!! You should have put a spoiler alert regarding the last sentence!!!! It won't be a surprise now!!!!😂😂😂😂

Apart from that you've really encouraged me for when I get to this run, hopefully within the next week. Must remember to buy some jelly babies for fuel.

Funny that you said about Coach B's advice coming at the right time. When I was doing the 8k I took a drink of water at about 5k, next thing Coach says is 'why not have a drink of water?'

Spooky :)

Oh no!!! I’ll go and edit!!! Hopefully it’s been a helpful tip off for fuelling/being mentally prepared.

Glad it was encouraging-I was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t feel any different really to the 8k run. I was tired but I think that’s mainly due to having run yesterday and being generally busy. Who’d have thought that the programme actually prepares you for the runs it tells you to do?! 🤣🤣🤣

You seem to have had one of those 'I can just keep on running' runs, well done.

It's really encouraging to notice the progress we are making with the Plan. I suppose that going from 8 to 9k is a lot less proportionally than say 3 to 4 or 5k. Aren't we doing well so far?

I'm not really upset about the spoiler ;)

We are nailing it!! This is the first plan I’ve done with a few buddies also having a go. I’ve loved it!! Can’t wait to hit 10k again. I’ve checked and as far as I can see, the last time I ran that was July 31st last year when I did 13km listening to all three parts of “Run with Lopez”. I’ve been up and down with illness and injuries. I think I might treat myself to a re-graduation present…

I'm really enjoying reading everyone else's take on the runs, it makes the whole thing even better!

Oooh-a shopping opportunity! What have you got in mind?

Probably a short sleeved t shirt for summer runs. I had one that was perfect but after a decade of wear, it’s finally given up the ghost. But trainers are always an option!!

Or both! 🌝

A great run... and a great distance... well done to you. !

I am a tad annoyed with CB as the last two runs, a tad like Yesletsgo have had glitches and I could not even save yesterday's at all! I still love him though !

These runs that turn into really super runs are just great... and I am intrigued by your running nibbles... I did not even know you could buy peanut butter balls! I think because up to 10K, I would only take water if warm weather, I never think about it?

The distance does sound odd, doesn't it, like 6K.. which for me is my, reach this, and I can run for ever, distance... I

You are doing amazingly and sound so strong.. that 10K is there for the taking:)

Thank you! You’re absolutely right about the slightly unplanned, impulse runs being great ones! Maybe it’s the last of expectation or pressure.

NRC has been a bit glitchy. It’s always a bit glitchy but it’s been worse over the past few days. Maybe there’s going to be an update as an Easter present! It’s super annoying when runs you’ve done won’t save!

I’d never usually take water for below 10k. Maybe it was the stuffy weather or maybe I started a bit dehydrated. I really like these peanut butter things. They’re a bit pricey but I never quite manage to make my own!

Well done ! A smashing run for you and a super distance. Oh and it was so flat🤣What I would give for some where flat to run without having to drive miles.

You are doing so well and peanut butter balls ? They sound delicious 😋 . I think I’ll have to look out for those .

MissUnderstanding you have filled me with encouragement for my next run.

An inspiration..that’s what you are ! So thank you😂😂.

Is it the Nike running app your using ?

🤣🤣 I usually prefer runs with a bit of variety in the terrain. I love a hill and have some favourites around here. It is nice to have a change though!

It’s the Nike app 10k plan. I think it’s been out for a few months. There used to only be a pdf to follow but this one is available now. I’ve really enjoyed the variety of runs and it’s definitely worked well for me. A nice change from the magic plan which I did last time.

It’s been great to share how it’s been going and I’m so glad it’s been encouraging! I’ve been loving your Couch to 5k rerun! ❤️
