Struggle with heat and humidity

Wrote a lengthy post and after attaching a photo, the damned post has disappeared! Oh well, I’ll write a shorter one.

We’re back in Burgundy again for two months before it cools down and we head south for a further three weeks. It’s been so hot and humid here (mid 30s and 69% humidity) I’ve been getting up at first light (6:01) and running for 30 minutes rather than distances. While at home I’d cover 6km in that time, here I’m struggling to get over 5.5km and average times per km also slow.

Still, aftershowering and rehydrating with 2 litres of diluted (very) orange juice, I’m sipping coffee listening to Mendelsohnn’s Songs without Words and feeling cooler and relieved running is over now till Momday!

Can just see a little mist on the lush fields at 7:00 am. A pre-cursor to Autumn’s arrival?

Have a good weekend everyone!

Wish I could motivate myself to get out early when it's hot, well done you!

It’s a state of mind (getting up early). Once awake I go into automatic and don’t think about my bed! Mind you, I’ve always been an early riser. For me, a weekend lie-in is 8:30😆

Lovely photo Vragtes, running in the heat and humidity isn't at all pleasant but if you can get out at sunrise you don't get the heat and the sun blazing down on you that you would get later in the day although humidity is at it's highest early in the morning, love your choice of diluted orange and the music 🎶 of Mendelssohn' s "Lieder Ohne Worte/Songs Without Words" I have those songs on Spotify, let's hope that the weather cools down soon.

Lovely reply, thanks. Actually, I love this hot weather unlike my better half.

One of the real joys of going out early to avoid the worst of the heat is when you’ve finished, it’s still early and few are about. So I can indulge my love of music and treat myself to whole works like Schubert’s Winterreise and just wallow in the wellbeing both running and music engender. These very troublesome times.

👍 I also like the music 🎶 of Franz Schubert.

I loathe running in hot weather and am hopeless first thing in the morning Vragtes , so have rarely got past 6k since the heat kicked here in a couple of months ago. I pushed it to 14k the other day and ended up with minor symptoms of heat exhaustion, so as we're currently under amber warning for heatwave again all I did today was a forest walk with a bit of jogging.

There again, if you're running 5.5k rather than your customary 6k in 30 minutes, you're still seriously speedy in my book!

Thank you for your reply. Honestly, I’m not trying to go fast. In fact, I set off and as the first part of my run is downhill for quite a distance and I deliberately slow myself down as I realise I’ll have the uphill on the return!

I’m pretty impressed with your 14k; I’ve only done 10km a few times, mostly doing between 5 and 8 km. I hope you’re over your possible heat exhaustion. That can make you feel very poorly. I know, I’ve suffered it a few times way back when I lived in South Africa.

It sounds like you're making the best of it, celebrating that you went out, despite the speed disappointment! 🥳

Humidity makes the heat more challenging for our bodies plus if the nights are staying as warm as they are here in Germany, you're not getting as much recovery during the nights either. So, taking it easier is a good investment so that you won't get sidelined with heat exhaustion or worse... And, yes, early morning or, if you can't manage that, very late in the evening are best. The worst time would be late afternoon... Heck it's almost 19:00 here and it just hit the high of 30°C about an hour ago...

Thank you! I wasn’t too disappointed just felt quite drained while running. Interesting what you say about not getting as much night time recovery in this heat. I’d not considered that but now you say it, I definitely felt it this week.

Here in France, and I suspect in Germany too, next week is supposed to be even hotter than this week. So take care too and enjoy yourself. 👍

Yea, there's apparently such a thing as accumulation that happens when we're exposed to heat over a longer time frame without getting a break, like through a cool night.

(I am using "apparently" here because I am not a scientist... just picked this up from some reporting on the global boiling this summer, such as wnycstudios.org/podcasts/ot... )

I wonder if we’ve got bugs on the site again. I had issues with posting pictures yesterday. Hopefully there’ll be an update from HU.

Great run. It’s so hard in the heat. Glad you were able to get the post to work!

I think that there may be some bug but it could also be my technical limitations. Apart from the post disappearing when I was trying to attach photos, I was, in the end, only able to attach one photo. As soon as I attached the second photo, it replaced the first photo! No great problem. 🙂

This is something tech I actually know about! It’s only possible to add one photo to each post-the multi photo collages have been done in other apps. This is why my posts only ever have one main photo!

There are known issues with adding photos though and may not be totally fixed yet.

Glad to see yours-it’s a beautiful picture!

I can't can't run in heat at all so this lack of summer we're having in the UK is something of a relief for me after last year's heatwave. Having said that I'm on othe IC at the moment as I've hurt my foot somehow and haven't run for weeks.

Vragtes profile image
VragtesGraduate10 in reply toRitmo

Sorry to learn of your foot injury. Hope it’s not too serious. Not sure what “IC” is. Let’s hope for a warm but dry autumn when you can get back out. All the best.

I also struggle wirh the heat and humidty and have been doing ahorter than normal runs, tbh last year i xouldnt even walk far in the heat and humidity and so it just shows you what running does as now i can run in heat and humidity albeit a vit slower and shorter distanes, role on autumn (not that im wishing the summer way) 😀

Well done you for persevering! Today is 38° and we’re sitting indoors with the shutters closed (we’re in France). As I’m not due a run now until Monday morning, I like to have at least a 20 minute walk on my rest days. While it is very hot, there was some shade and a little warm breeze. So I quite enjoyed a walk around the village. So no one and not even the feral kittens that I greet on my morning runs.

XenaZelda in reply toVragtes

Blimey thats hot!!! I definately couldnt run in that, the temperature was 20c on my run this morning thats quite hot enough! Nice in the shade of the trees and slight breeze but got home and sweating like made with the high humidity here 🥵

Vragtes profile image
VragtesGraduate10 in reply toXenaZelda

Yes, I didn’t run in the 38°; just a gentle stroll around the ville. Pleased you got out at 20°c this a.m. I too got out at 06:30. It was still 24° but it seemed a lot less humid than the day before and I managed a slowish 6.5km in 36 mins. Now cooled down to 32° but hot for the rest of the week! 🥵

Weather report
XenaZelda profile image
XenaZelda in reply toVragtes

Cooled down to 32c gosh! good luck with that, my next planned run is tomorrow but seeing as my hip pain hasn't completely gone i will be walking for an hour instead in the possible 25c heat here, will go for a run on Friday where the temperature will be lower at max of 22c a lot better but still hot, as long as its not humid😀

Vragtes profile image
VragtesGraduate10 in reply toXenaZelda

On Tuesday night, something gave me stomach pains and I was up most of the night which I won’t describe further. Come 6:15 a.m. I was not up to going for Wednesday’s run.

So had Wednesday recuperating and getting my fluid levels up. Resting today too which is scheduled to bring in thunderstorms including hail followed by much lower temps. So plan to do 6-8 km on Friday, even if it’s pouring with rain. Hopefully, we’ll both be facing much lower humidity tomorrow. Fingers’ crossed and take care!

XenaZelda profile image
XenaZelda in reply toVragtes

oh sorry to hear that, lots of things can affect our planned runs, hope you feel better. I love to run in the rain as its so cooling, i have had nights of terrible sleep and woke up feeling right s'''t but then i push myself out of the door and when i come back from a run i feel so much better and more awake, My hip feels even better today but not completely gone, so debating whether to go for a run tomorrow (as i am off work) or walk again to give my hip more time and only run when i don't feel anything in my hip, but i know what i'm like, i will set off tomorrow for a planned walk and then try a run 🙄 i just don't want to go backwards in my running journey as i have come so far. hope you feel better and and get out there for your 6-8 km run tomorrow.

Vragtes profile image
VragtesGraduate10 in reply toXenaZelda

I’m amazed at how persistent you are XenaZelda. You run with a sore hip AND you also have to go to work! I’d assumed you were lucky enough to have stopped working!

Edit: I’d made a foolish assumption, for no good reason, that you were retired! Sorry, no offence intended.

I’m not sure I could have continued working and run as well. Mind you, for 6 years before I retired, I used to swim 65 lengths of a 25 metre pool each morning which was a great way of my dealing with stress. Hope your planned walk goes well. Still v hot and humid here in France today and the promised thunderstorm seems to have disappeared!
