The time has come to retire my shoes, the brooks I use for day to day are completely worn and the Saucony's I run in have lost their bounce. Happyhays and I walked just over 4k yesterday and I woke with quite a few aches this morning.
We've been out for a run this morning and all my aches have gone but I'm getting slower and I can feel my shoes need to be replaced. So I've ordered some.
Happy Friday run happy.

I've been walking around n them mostly, and yeah, I suddenly realis d it was time to replace them, my runners aren't a lot better and suddenly I have no bounce.
I retired my first Cascadias - the >1000 km ones - to use as walking shoes, but after a couple of hikes realised they weren't even up to that, made my feet hurt!
I want to run before my new shoes arrive but won't go far, the really worn ones are now in the bin, not worth wearing, any wet paths and I could skid over,
I think around 500, those brooks though I bought on eBay 3 years ago, I wanted to know if the size was right and they were only £12 so I wouldn't lose much if they didn't fit. I wore them for a year running then a year to work as every day shoes and now this year I've done a lot more walking with my neighbour and my knees and hips are begining to protest, and I ran in them the other day when I couldn't be bothered to change them which was a bit silly. I've ordered some Reebok's because I know they suit me and if no good for running I can use for everyday wear and walking.
How long is a piece of string Gthants ? 😉 Joking apart, your build, mileage, frequency and running terrain will all play a part. For me it's time to change shoes if they no longer feel as supportive, comfortable or bouncy as they used to, if tread is worn or if there's other damage that affects performance.
I got over 1000km out of my first pair of Brooks Cascadia trail shoes, despite running some of the time on roads. However, I'm sure my Brooks Divides trail shoes won't last nearly as long, despite similar usage. And I ditched a pair of New Balance before 400km.
Exactly - and that's an interesting comparison. When I spent £100 on shoes that were on offer, that was a fortune for me - especially as a novice runner. They're great though. But if I get (say) half the miles I do from a £150 pair ... ? It's trial (or trail!🤣) and error! I wish I could splurge on a couple of pairs and see which ones work best for me. But for now I'm happy.
Oh I did C25K in a pair of trainers I'd had hanging around for ages, probably New Balance (not the early ditched pair) or Asics, I can't recall. Probably did my first 10K in those or the bought-in-sale Decathlon pair I also discovered in my cupboard!
Didn't pluck up courage to go to a running shop until I got fed up sliding around on trails. They sold me the Cascadias, which was just as well, as I went and signed up for a trail marathon! 🙃
Now I have a better idea what works for me and feel more confident buying, so also have Decathlon and Saucony as well as Brooks, all bought in sales or on Vinted! Think I'll be heading back to the running shop sometime though. Just need to wear out the current pairs!
I’m agonising over shoes as well Sue.. since my surgery I’ve gone up a full shoe size and none of my old shoes fit. As it’s summer my first purchase in the correct size was white Sauconys - Kinvara 13, so I could wear with dresses as well as trousers for now.. They are perfect, but if course as soon as I got them the rain started. With no others to fit I’ve had to wear them everywhere, so now they are grey! I really need to invest in some trail shoes asap.
Oh no, what a shame about the weather, it's funny you should mention trail shoes, I got mine out earlier and wore them for a while and they felt great I've only worn them twice before. I wear black trainers with dresses but then I'm a bit odd,
Most of my dog walking is on rough ground so I wear trail shoes almost all the time.. I bought Hokas in the first lockdown, then Saucony Peregrine 10, most comfortable ever shoes for my bunion. I’m fine with retiring them, as they are really worn out, but just before my surgery I bought full price Peregrine 13 which are now too small.. I probably need to try to work out how to sell them on eBay and then get the next size up, but I think I’ll have to find a cheaper replacement 😩
It is difficult isn't it? Selling on eBay is a good option and I've never seen running shoes as cheap again, I am gink the ones I got were a fluke, good luck with your search for new comfy shoes
Thanks Elaine.. I really liked some Cascadias I got from tkmaxx about eight years ago. I changed to Saucony after them because the lower foot drop takes the pressure off the area on my stump that sometimes gets sore. I think rather than hunting for others with low drop I’m just going to order Saucony Peregrine 12. They are half the price of 13s now. Xx
well done on your run, I am too going to order a new pair of shoes Brooks ghost when I get back. Feel like mine might wear out shortly and I like the ones I use even if they are expensive. You’ve only got one pair of feet . Take care of your tootsies.
You are quite right Doris, I've gone a bit mad and now ordered 3 pairs, one for everyday wear, plain black that I can wear with jeans, and 2 for running alternating walking, what with 2 new pairs of glasses bought yesterday it's been an expensive week
At least they've referred me at last for cataract surgery, I was disappointed last year that they wouldn't refer me. You are right glasses are expensive, I'm having distance and reading this time though rather than the varifocals I usually have as I'll probably need more in a few months
😁 I'll still need glasses but maybe not new ones every year, with my last year's ones I can now see better without so the new ones should make a huge difference
Remember to give us a pic of the new shoes when they arrive!
I was going to treat myself for my birthday back in April but I've run so little it doesn't seem very urgent.
I did buy some trainers just for walking when I was away, Ellesse from TK Maxx. They have a much thinner sole than my other trainers and a memory foam insole. They are incredibly comfortable and seem to help my bad hip which developed over the summer. Unfortunately the insides seem to have given up the ghost after just a couple of months which is really disappointing.
I've got a doctor's appointment next week regarding my hip/knee issues so will wait until after that (and hopefully a physio appointment) before buying anything expensive.
Ooo new shoes 👟, get me so excited thinking about them, but I'm banned from buying any, in the last eighteen months I've bought, 2 new pairs of walking boots to add to the 3 pairs I've already got, I've bought a pair of approach shoes for walking/climbing, a pair of Salomon trail shoes and New Balance running shoes, plus a pair of Sketchers and Berghaus everyday trainers. I'm getting withdrawal symptoms now.😋
I'm looking forward to getting them, that's the thing with online buying, have to wait but they will be here soon and I've still got running shoes, just not everyday ones so the runners will have to do everything for a few days 😁
Best to keep your running shoes just for running SueAppleRun . (Coach Bennett and Brooks advice) I also find that alternating 2 different brands helps them last longer and better for your feet. Then when they are retired from running, I use them for walking.
I always keep my running shoes for just running Dexy, but that will mean barefoot until Tuesday now as I've thrown my walking ones away, I suppose I could always go shopping in my wellies though, on the advice of my dermatologist I don't have real shoes, only trainers hence a year for running then a year or two down walking, I do have trail shoes though bought in your advice years ago and worn twice. The day I ran in my old shoes was because I wasn't sure I'd run and couldn't be bothered to change them.
It's ok, maybe I wasn't clear, yes I should get on the trails, at the moment I'm tired so probably having a few days off, I might keep two to alternate running and the other for walking, I went a bit mad and ordered 3 pairs, all 3 I've run in before and know they fit.
I have made to measure insoles so most neutral shoes are good for me.
Its exciting getting new running shoes isnt it, ive been after a certain pair of beautiful running shoes for a couple of months for my sunday longer runs hoping they would go down in the sale, and then when it only got a few pairs left in stock i suddenly decided to bite the bullet and buy them at full price 🫢 but i will have to wait to wear them unfortunately until im able to get back to where i was once my injury is conpletely better, ill post a picture of them at some point
