How to enjoy every run
So, so much that. Be more Nixon!
Thanks nowster for a running video to which I can finally, and predictably, relate!
This is absolutely brilliant. Thanks for sharing!
Yay we all need to be more like our doggos 🐶🐾
Brilliant! I enjoyed running so much more before I bought my first Garmin watch!
The trick is to set it to display just the current time or the distance left, with no alerts. Run by feel. Analysis can happen afterwards.
This reminds me of my running friend. A group of us were at the start line of a HM, fingers on watches. He pulled up his sleeve and said "I must start mine". No watch... "We will finish in 2h10". He laughed and skipped the whole way, and yes, finished in 2h10. He has come off Strava because he feels there is too much peer pressure. I get my running club to run by feel occasionally - I take their watches and offer a small prize for the runner coming in closest to 30 mins.
Sometimes, the technology gets in the way of fun. Loved the video!
I like the idea of confiscating watches Teresa1632 , but for me running by feel isn't the same as trying to run for a particular duration. For me that sort of challenge would feel as pressured as trying to run at a specified min/km pace, or heart rate.
To me running by feel is running by perceived effort, and I don't even use a numeric scale to measure that. My scale ranges more from pootle-wootle singalong I can do this all day pace to I can hardly breathe this is killing me why am I doing this pace. The latter very rarely happens!
This running by perceived effort is what I've learned from running with the Nike Run Club guided runs. I still have my phone tracking with the app, and I still have my Garmin watch doing it's thing. But I don't think about the watch from the time I begin the run, to the time I end the run. I am oblivious of the technology (appart from coach Lucien telling me to run at an easy pace around 5/10 effort etc) until the run is over. This is much more pleasurable than what I was doing up until a few weeks ago with Audiofuel podcasts, trying to maintain a constant speed or cadence, and trying to achieve a particular 5k or 10k time. The effort thing with NRC has restored the joy in running that I discovered running with C25K & Laura in 2014, and had long since forgotten. Running is fun again, and I now genuinely look forward to it again.
That's great to hear Zev1963 .
I can't handle audio-coached stuff - never tried Audiofuel (the name alone makes me cringe) and poor old Coach Lucien was scrapped after about a minute too. My current listening is France Culture's Les Pieds sur Terre podcasts, or music, or nothing at all except the sounds of my surroundings, usually birdsong, tractors, and dogs barking or baying!
I see an marketing opportunity there, A Grrrmin!!!!
In my case that wouldn't be a running gadget for dogs Freecloud , it simply describes most of my interactions with my running watch!
Love it! Thank you Nowster, and thank you Nixon.
