Morning! 👋 I hope this week’s check in finds you all happily ensconced in your respective Quests? 🤞 Let us know!
I’m chuffed to announce that my personal Quest is going very well. 🙏🏻 I’ve resumed my daily yoga, and even do a weekly live class. Adriene taught me well (I was pretty nervous the first time!) I’ve also cracked out the hula hoop for some quick spins. 😀 Running is great, nothing new there, even after an appalling self-induced slow time at PR last weekend. I’m blaming the Prosecco I was forced to drink at a 60th birthday dinner (😈🤥)
So …. share your progress, good, bad and/or ugly, and see you next week. ❤️
Here’s the link to my original post in case you need reminding what yours is, or if you’ve stumbled across this post and want to know what the Quest is all about. 😀
Hiya Cheeky! Your yoga is really going from strength to strength! 👍
I’ve just started the second week of my training. More intervals yesterday. Found my threshold pace finally. Weights at the gym tonight.
Saturday I went to London and went to ‘Meet Our Experts’. It was a bit of a selling exercise as they tried to get us to buy lots of New Balance stuff but the actual talks were really useful. Also a vast selection of runners from all sorts of backgrounds, and a majority of ladies in the audience I’d say.
Progression run tomorrow then first proper long run on Sunday. ‘Only’ 8 miles but I’m going to run to heart rate and walk when it gets too high. I thought that would be better than standard Jeffing.
Here we go Cheeky, a really handy slide I took a photo of. Best explanation of the different paces I’ve ever seen!
I’m not sure I could get more fired up tbh 😂. I do have a hope for time of under 5.5 hours but who knows, I just want to finish without feeling so tired I can’t enjoy it properly.
Ahh thanks TC. I’d only be using a couple of those paces if I were to run a marathon, interspersed with a dash of snail! Hint, not the ones nearer the right! 😅
You’ll be awesome, you know it. And I bet you’ll achieve that time too. 👊 🏃♀️ 😀
That sounds brilliant, well done Cheeky! 👏👏👏 I'm still keeping up with the JD challenge ✅ and I'm averaging over 10000 steps a day so still on track for the 300k steps Garmin challenge ✅ running, I'm doing 3 runs per week (yay), aiming to get back to 4 by sometime in July. I'm going on holiday next week and I won't be able to pack my running gear (we're travelling light!) but we will be going on lots of walks 🤠
Wonderful news Beatles. Are you seeing changes in your strength/flexibility now that you’re a JD challenge veteran? I need to fit strength training into my routine ….. but where?
Good luck with your running progress, and you’re going to smash that 300k Garmin steps challenge. Enjoy your hols, and happy walking there. We’re off to France next month. I’ll be packing my running gear - it gets priority over posh frocks nowadays! 😅
Ah but we're flying with Ryanair and we're allowed just one tiny backpack each (we've decided to travel very, very light), which is not too bad in the summer. Not so easy when we went on holiday in February 😅Hmmm good question. At the moment I'm feeling the exercises working where they're supposed to i.e. my legs are achy where they should be. I've not noticed too much impact on my running lately but maybe it's because I'm not too fond of this warm and humid weather plus I've not been hydrating enough 🙈 Yoga and hula hooping surely must count as strength training?
I bought a flight bag that was the exact maximum size allowed by Ryanair, it's surprisingly big if you pack carefully, just roll everything very small and wear your bulkiest clothes. I also got myself a belly bag for my Ryanair flight, big enough for passport, kindle, snacks etc and under a big jumper nobody challenged me.
Thanks Yesletsgo . We’re not going until the middle of next month, but I’m already looking forward to it. We’re off to a remote part of coastal Brittany and it should be lovely. And because we’re driving, there’s no limit to the running gear I can pack. 😀😍🙏🏻
Amazing! That sounds like absolute bliss 🥐🍷🧀🇫🇷 We used to drive down to France and even Spain when we had both dogs. Now that it's just the younger one we tend to fly because he doesn't travel well, especially on his own, poor guy 🤢🐶
Aww, bless him. ❤️ We’re lucky in that Flossie considers the car her safe haven. She’s a nervous little Nelly, and we have to cajole her into eating on holiday (Lab too! 🤷♀️ 😅), but the car is never an issue. 🙏🏻
That's really good. Our older boy loved the car. We had loads of lovely hols here in the UK and also abroad with him 🥰 it makes life so much easier, I hate leaving them
We used to have wonderful boarders who had a massive house and garden and two labs that got on so well with our boys, but they've moved abroad. Now we have someone who stays at our place because our dog is quite nervous and doesn't like change (he always relied on our older dog for guidance and reassurance). But I still hate leaving him, I always cry on our way to the airport 😅
Good old Ryanair, generous as ever! 🤥😅 We’re driving so will have plenty of room, even with dog and her paraphernalia. 🐕
Yes I’m sure yoga counts towards strength - or at least some of the practices do. Lots are lovely and stretchy, and too relaxing to be called a workout. Hula hooping gets the heart rate up, that’s for sure.
Dead jealous, I love Brittany. Going by car is the best, you can take all the stuff you need and really explore when you get there. Plus there's the lovely ferry ride which I really enjoy.Eat some cheese and saucisson for me while you're there!
I went with Ryan air to Sweden in March....like you one small backpack. I tied my running shoes to the outside! Leggings and top I wore under other clothes.... It worked!
Brilliant idea! I'll consider doing that in the autumn / winter but I can't see myself wearing multiple layers at the moment 🥵😅 did they not say anything about the shoes? My backpack is the exact measurements allowed by Ryanair so I'd be worried they'd make me leave my shoes behind 😱
Enjoy your holiday Beatlesforever, I hope the weather isn't too hot for you, even if you don't take your running gear/shoes you could go for a short slow 2k or 3k 'maintenance' run with ordinary trainers, see how it goes, the main thing is to enjoy your holiday.
Great work cheeky; setting a fine example 🙂. Another 5k today, over the same course as Sunday, but a bit less slow at 33:43. VO2 max didn’t make a deduction so all good…..it must be in holiday mode too. Running in a bit of heat is a nice change. I will be creating an economic stimulus in the high tariff sun protection market though. We had a lovely boat trip to St Martins yesterday, garnished with superb on the spot made steak pasties and date and apple slice. Next run will be a long one, so route planning is required. Do I go for the easiest route to get the distance or go for a slow hilly challenge? See how I feel on the day is the way I think. I came across another couple of runners today, one with a dog which kept darting into the hedge….it reminded why I don’t take Molly on runs! Happy running all. 🙂
You’re having the best weather for your hols BC. Hopefully a cooling sea breeze to help. That’s a great 5k time and yet again you’re making fabulous progress. 👊
Your boat trip sounds wonderful. Wait - made to order steak pasties? Oh wow, yum. 😋
I’d pick the easiest route for your long run I think. I enjoy a hill or two, but not combined with distance.
Darting doggies are an issue for owners and fellow runners alike I think. Certain breeds always stand out for that type of behaviour, but I’m being diplomatic! Hint: not OESs or Labs! 😅
One of the advantages of the islands is that you can choose the breezy side or the sheltered side as the weather and/or mood requires. Cup of tea now. Lunch was gammon and emmental on toasted focaccia, all beautifully seasoned and garnished and served by the Italian lady….I could really get used to this!
Sorry….this is supposed to be about running! I think you are right about the long run. There is no need to make it harder deliberately at this stage. I guess the GSR doesn’t have too many steep hills? I am going out to run first thing to take advantage of the lower temperatures. There are a few other runners about at that time so smiles and cheery “good mornings” are exchanged. Did I say that I could get used to this …🙂
I'm getting to grips with a new watch and generally ignoring its advice for now. It doesn't know me yet.
Back to what's more like my normal routine after a few irregular weeks. From the rain being my frustration in the earlier weeks, it may now be the heat. I'm definitely going to have to get up earlier to run for the next few days at least.
What has changed recently is I've decided to add back intervals runs, after a year of not doing any.
I'm currently looking at Sunday's forecast. At the moment they're forecasting torrential rain in the morning. However, the afternoon might be ideal for a long run if it stays dry and cooler. Perhaps that 30km run? Perhaps "merely" a Half. (Me of two years ago is looking aghast at that thought.)
As ever, awesome nowster. I’ve decided I don’t like wind and rain, especially wind, so I’ve been hiding at the gym a lot recently. What it has taught me is the ability to run in the heat, and even to embrace it. I ran on the common yesterday, and even though it was warm, it didn’t affect me at all.’🙏🏻
Enjoy your intervals; something else I’ve grown to love.😀 And good luck on your long run, wet or dry.
Hi cheekychipmunks and running friends, hope you’re all doing well. I’m happily on track to run 10K by the end of the month, having run 8K at the Thrive 5 at Selsey on Sunday (which I’ve written about separately on HU). Last night I ran 7K on a run with some friends from running club, and I’ve got another 8K (5 miles) at the Felpham 5 along the beach this Sunday. Hope the tide is out long enough for me to finish 🏃♂️🌊🏁Good luck with your runs everyone, take care and make sure you stay hydrated! 💦
Fantastic David! Your injury appears to be a thing of the past now, and that’s fantastic news. 🙏🏻👊😀 Well done on your 5 miles at Selsey, and good luck for Sunday in Felpham. Stay cool 😎 🏃♂️
Well done Cheeky, you are leading the way with your quests. I’ve not done too bad, 2 runs, 2 cycles and 2 walks since last Wednesday. It’s got very warm here in SW France and forecast to get even hotter over the next two days (I believe it will be warm in the U.K. too) , so rest day tomorrow I think. Sadly not started the yoga 😢 despite checking out what Adriene had to offer.
Looks lovely Shakes, albeit warm. Yes it’s warm here too, getting up very high tomorrow and Friday. Back to normal at the weekend though. And there goes our summer! 😅
Maybe you can just dip in and out of yoga when time allows? Adriene has numerous videos; pretty much one for whatever mood takes you, or whichever body part needs work or TLC. 🧘♀️
Amazing work BBR, you’re packing everything in! 🧘♀️🏃♀️💪
I often take Coach Bennett (or one of his chums) along with me at PR too. You could pick a 5k one, or one which more or less matches the amount of time you think it’ll take. He’s versatile is our friendly coach! 😅
Hi cheekychipmunks and everyone!Still haven't done 10k so not only have I missed doing it before the anniversary of starting C25K I've also missed doing it before the anniversary of finishing it. Oh well, I'll have to give myself another deadline to miss.
Not sure when I'll next be running. We set off yesterday at 2am and sailed to Ramsgate, with the intention of getting to Brighton before Saturday. There's a Parkrun in Hove but it's a long way from the Marina to there without a car. Can anyone local advise me if there's a Parkrun that'll be nearer?
I suppose I could run 5 km away from the Marina and 5 km back but on a hard surface that wouldn't do my knees much good.
Ahh, never mind about the 10k Yes. It’ll be there waiting for you, you know that! 😀
How wonderful to be sailing. I’m not from that side of the country so can’t advise which PRs are closest, but I know plenty of south coasters are on here, so hopefully someone can help. 🤞
I think buses along the seafront are good in Brighton to Hove, the seafront is nice to run along but you are right maybe hard in your knees, have fun though, I was there today on a conference for work, it’s really warm
Hello Yesletsgo - there is East Brighton Parkrun which is very close to the Marina. I've not done it but think its laps round the field so might be better on your knees. As SueAppleRun say, there are regular buses from The Marina into Brighton/Hove - think it might be the No 7 to Hove and believe it takes about 20mins if you want to do the Hove one (buses.co.uk/services/BH/7)
Daily yoga sounds great! I’m missing that but I’m doing so much S&F work as post-run and post-row stretches, as well as the JD challenge, I can’t fit it in. (YWA recently dropped a bedtime session which I’ve not looked at yet, but must do!)
Since last week I have:
- finished C25k Zombie version ✅
- not quite finished my rowing 10k plan but did reach for the first time 10k in one rowing session! ✅🎊
- that 10k row also meant that for the first time, I continually rowed without rest for 60 minutes‼️✅
- but still 1 1/2 weeks to go in the rowing plan 🥵🚣🏼♂️
- and 23 days to go on the James Dunne challenge 😳 💪
- But back in running, I joined the NRC gang and started to go through all audio-guided runs from beginner plan onwards! 🎧
Hi cheekychipmunks …my quest is going ok….I’m managing to get out and run still, as and when life allows, but I’m enjoying it when I’m out there…hope everyone else has quest success 😁
Hello 😀 I was lazy last week so catching up with week 2 of my HM plan and found I really enjoyed the second speed run, very surprising after a day at work and hot weather, Happy questing
Hello cheekychipmunks and fellow questers hope you're all doing well. Well done on doing the daily yoga and hula hoop. My quests this week have gone well:1) YES - run at least 3 times a week
2) YES -continue with garmin coach 10k plan for race on 10th july. Am on week 25 out 28.
3) YES - not chase a parkrun for any I do this month. Did a parkrun on Saturday and didn't push myself too hard even though I found it really tough as it was hilly
4) YES - cross train twice a week - managed to fit in 2 long walks and a weights session
5) YES - cut back on any of the above if I feel I am doing too much too soon - just did one weights session this week as it felt rather taxing and did most of my runs at an easy pace
Will try and incorporate at least one swim session this coming week.
Good luck with your quests this week and in this heat!!!
A bit on the limp side here I'd say, need to sharpen my focus if I want to achieve these Quest goals! (Been quite busy pursuing some other goals)
I'm keeping up with #30DaysWild... not exactly the wildest but I've had something to record every day and I am enjoying looking back over each day and making a brief note of noticed nature.
Technical issues with downloading/streaming yoga classes. Might be able to get round that with better planning.
The running and the decluttering - draw a veil and apply a kicking boot!
Last week was fantastic. 3 runs. 2 brand new routes. Lots of strengthening & pilates.
This week - Monday - twingy ankle (the other one this time), a super busy week at work with lots of new opportunities (very exciting) and the heat in East Sussex has put paid to any running but I have been good at doing some strength exercises (just).
I think we are due some rain on Sunday so hope to get out then.
Well done for getting a great head start anyway beth_f. At least you’ll be in a good place when you resume. I don’t blame you for not running in this heat. 🥵
I've really enjoyed reading everyone's comments. Im glad you're enjoying the gym, I remember you said the common was very windy and could be muddy.
I havent set any specific targets, but I do try and run a minimum of 10 miles each week. I'm on holiday at the moment, I have brought my running gear, but as we'll be doing plenty of walking I may not manage a run too. A 5k would be great though! 🤞However, I'll he happy if I can do a few planks and push ups, maintain my weight and not over-indulge in food and drink!
I think that was my downfall Cantstopmenow...holiday breakfasts, ice creams and meals out!I took my running gear on holiday and it had a lovely rest in the wardrobe!
Enjoy some lovely holiday walks and relax you really deserve it.
Hope you’re having a wonderful time. It’s always hard to keep to any kind of fitness regime when you’re away isn’t it? That’s ok though, we deserve some R&R - and delicious food and drink to go with it! It tastes nicer somehow. 😅
Yes I became heartily cheesed off with running on the common, mainly because it was the only place I ran during the lockdowns. It’s exposed and windy, and yes it can be muddy in the winter. The gym is lots of fun, and whereas it certainly hasn’t replaced my outdoor runs, it’s ticking all my boxes at the moment. 🙏🏻
Enjoy your holiday and pop a plank or two in for good measure. And if you can fit in a run that’s all the better. 😍
